🚒 DID YOU KNOW? | Which Trucks Respond?

In our last post, we talked about why you may see multiple fire trucks responding to the same emergency.

But what determines which trucks get sent?

The Fredericton Fire Department staffs five frontline apparatus with five crews across our city:

🚒 2 Aerial Trucks
🚒 2 Engines
🛟 1 Rescue

The response changes depending on the type of emergency:

🚑 Medical Calls
The apparatus assigned to that area responds — whether it’s an engine, aerial or rescue. When someone needs help, the closest appropriate crew and apparatus may not look like the fire truck you expected!

🚗 Motor Vehicle Collisions
The apparatus covering that area is dispatched along with Rescue 1 from York Street. Rescue 1 responds to collisions throughout the city because it carries specialized rescue and extrication equipment.

🚨 Fire Alarms
A typical response includes one aerial, one engine and Rescue 1, providing multiple crews and different capabilities should the alarm turn out to be an emergency.

🔥 Structure Fires
This is where you’ll see a much larger response. All five city crews respond, along with the Platoon Captain(incident commander). Each crew has an assignment and works as part of one coordinated operation.

🌊 Water Rescues
These require another specialized response. Rescue 1 responds to help locate and assess the emergency, while the York Street aerial crew transports Marine 1 to the water. On the Northside, the aerial crew brings the Special Operations Unit, and the Platoon Captain also responds.

So the next time you see several Fredericton fire trucks heading in the same direction, remember — they aren’t all bringing the same thing to the call.

Different apparatus carry different equipment, and their crews may have different assignments, but they share one goal: getting the right resources to the right place when they’re needed.

🔥 STRUCTURE FIRE RESPONSE – KING STREET

At approximately 8:47 p.m. last night, all Fredericton fire crews responded to a residential structure fire on King Street.

Upon arrival, Truck 1 and Rescue 1 found smoke and fire coming from the second floor. Crews stretched an attack line to the second floor for an aggressive fire attack, while simultaneously searching and evacuating the remainder of the building.

The fire was quickly extinguished, and the incident was brought under control at 9:24 p.m.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

Fire prevention responded to the scene and the cause remains under investigation.

🚒 APPARATUS SPOTLIGHT | What’s Actually Inside a Fire Truck?

You see them responding through the streets of Fredericton — but have you ever wondered what firefighters are carrying inside?

A fire engine is essentially a mobile toolbox built for emergencies.

Depending on the apparatus, our crews carry equipment for:

🔥 Fire suppression
🪜 Ladders and forcible entry
🚗 Vehicle collisions and extrication
🚑 Medical emergencies
🪢 Rescue operations
💧 Water supply
☣️ Hazardous situations
🔦 Search and rescue

And that’s only scratching the surface.

Every compartment has a purpose, and every piece of equipment needs to be checked, maintained and ready to use when the call comes in.

🚒 DID YOU KNOW? | The Call Isn’t Over When We Get Back

When a fire truck returns to the station after an emergency, the work often isn’t finished.

Before that apparatus is ready for the next call, crews may need to:

🧯 Replace and check equipment used on scene
🚒 Clean and return tools to service
💨 Refill air cylinders
🧼 Clean contaminated equipment and protective gear
📋 Complete reports and documentation
🔧 Check the apparatus and make sure everything is ready to go again

And sometimes, there isn’t much time to do it.

The next call can come in at anytime— which is why keeping our trucks, equipment and crews ready is a constant part of every shift.

Respond. Reset. Ready again.

It’s another part of the job the public doesn’t always get to see.

🔥 Fredericton Firefighters Representing in Texas! 🇨🇦🇺🇸

Members of the Fredericton Firefighters Association, IAFF Local 1053, were in Arlington, Texas this week attending the 58th IAFF Convention, alongside more than 1,000 delegates from across Canada and the United States.

🏆 We’re especially proud to share that Local President Barry Durling was presented with the District 15 Local Leadership Award!

District 15 represents IAFF locals throughout the Atlantic Provinces, making this a tremendous honour and recognition of Barry’s leadership and commitment to our members.

The convention provides an opportunity to learn, collaborate, and ensure Fredericton firefighters have a voice at the table as we work together to strengthen our union and the fire service.

Congratulations, Barry, on this well-deserved recognition! 👏🔥

🚒 WHY DO FIREFIGHTERS TRAIN SO OFTEN?

You’ve probably seen Fredericton firefighters training around the city and wondered — why so much training?

The answer is simple: we never know what the next call will bring.

🔥 Structure fires
🚗 Motor vehicle collisions
🪢 Technical rescues
🌊 Water emergencies
☣️ Hazardous materials incidents
🚑 Medical emergencies
🏢 High-rise and commercial incidents

And much much more.

Each type of emergency requires different skills, equipment and teamwork.

That’s why training is a regular part of every firefighter’s job. Crews continually practice everything from hose advancement and water supply to search and rescue, ladders, vehicle extrication and much more.

The goal is to make those skills second nature — so when an emergency happens, our crews are prepared to act.

We train for the calls we hope never happen.

Today, the Fredericton Fire Fighters Association remembers Robb Costello and Sara Burns of the Fredericton Police Force.
On August 10, 2018, while responding to the shooting of Donnie Robichaud and Bobbi-Lee Wright, Cst Costello and Cst Burns paid the ultimate sacrifice in the protection of the citizens of Fredericton.

There’s a lot that happens during a firefighter’s shift beyond responding to emergency calls.

Recently, on-duty Fredericton firefighters have provided standby coverage for a fireworks display 🎆 and motorcycle parade 🏍️, and were also on hand at the annual Firefighters vs. Police Softball Game 🚒🥎🚓 — all while remaining in service and ready to respond to emergencies throughout the city.

Between calls, our crews are also busy training, maintaining apparatus and equipment, completing station duties, participating in public education, and supporting community events like these.

Being part of the community we serve is an important part of the job — but no matter where our crews are or what they’re doing, emergency response always comes first.

When the tones drop, everything else stops.

Just another look at what your Fredericton firefighters do 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. 🚒
