🌿Wetlands 🌿

Wetlands filter, protect, and they provide. Without them, we'd need upwards of $8,000 in flood control per hectare! Wetlands can retain water runoff from an area 70 times its size.

We all have a responsibility to protect our lands and our environment for the next seven generations.

🌿Invasive Species - Dog Strangling Vine 🌿

Dog-Strangling Vine (DSV) is an invasive species of plant that wraps around what it can, outcompeting native plants, interfering with infrastructure, and hindering forestry and agricultural operations.

If you encounter Dog-Strangling Vine on your property or in the wild (on reserve land), call the SMFN (Sitansisk) Band Office and ask to speak with Natural Resources.

🐟 Did You Know? 🐟

When released into the wild, Goldfish feed on native fish eggs, snails, aquatic plants, and small fish, competing with native fish species and growing rapidly to take away habitat and food sources from native fish species.

Goldfish feeding activity can also disturb the bottom of waterbodies, increasing the turbidity (or cloudiness) of water which prevents sunlight from reaching aquatic plants below.

Goldfish have been primarily introduced into NB waterways as discarded pets when people dump their Goldfish and aquariums into local waterbodies or as pond “escapees” in severe flooding events.

🌲 Earth Week 🌲

This week, we honour the land that holds us, feeds us, and teaches us.

Caring for the Earth is not a one-day reminder. It is a responsibility carried every day through our actions, our teachings, and our relationships with the land, water, and all things living.

Earth Week is a time to reflect, but also to act. To listen more closely. To protect more fiercely. To walk more gently.

We all have a role in this.
