Learning Outside - CCNB

Learning Outside - CCNB Learning Outside is a project of the Conservation Council of New Brunswick. Please visit our websit

The Learning Outside project is an initiative of the Conservation Council of New Brunswick (CCNB) that seeks to reconnect New Brunswick’s youth with the natural heritage of the places they inhabit. CCNB believes that New Brunswick schools should offer an environment where nature is used as an educational resource. Instead of developing new environmental education curriculum, the project endeavours

to facilitate outdoor experiences for New Brunswick students by finding creative ways of teaching existing curriculum in natural spaces on school grounds on nearby. Outdoor experiences have been found to have numerous benefits for developing children, including:

• Prevention of childhood obesity and other health issues related to lack of physical activity
• Improved concentration and impulse control (reduced symptoms of ADD and ADHD)
• Improved motor coordination
• Increased sense of self-esteem and confidence
• Increased sense of curiosity, creativity, and engagement in learning

What signs of spring have you seen? I saw my first coltsfoot this past weekend. Every year, suddenly there's a patch of bright yellow somewhere along a roadside. I look forward to all of the colours that will be brightening our world over the next few weeks!🌼

Nadine Nuthatch's Nature Neighbours. Post #1 (to accompany the photo album posted last week). I'm starting with Coltsfoot, a species that's recently become one of my favourites. Superficially, they may look like dandelions, but the fun is in the details.

I am writing up some of our Learning Outside weather activities (I'll let you know when they are up on our website), Why am I so passionate about incorporating the study of weather into teaching for all grades? This article sums it up very well.
And the best place to learn about weather is..... outside, of course!

Whether the weather be fine,
Or whether the weather be not,
Whether the weather be cold,
Or whether the weather be hot,
We'll weather the weather
Whatever the weather,
Whether we like it or not!

Why NOT weather! You should teach weather to students because it helps them make critical connections, reinforces the scientific method, and helps gets them involved in science.
