CNHHE is committed to building capacity among NGOs in addressing the multitude of facets where toxic chemicals are introduced into Canadian's daily lives.

Join us and CELA as we explore the resources and access to information available through the National Pollutant Inventory Release (NPRI) portal and discuss it's potential for NGOs to evaluate the pollutants released in their area. We'll also discuss the challenges of the system, analogies with Chemicals Management Plan and offer opportunity for NGOs to get involved.

Speakers:

Melanie Langille, M.Env.Sc. President of CNHHE and NB Lung. Melanie is an environmental scientist with a technical background in human health and ecological risk assessment.

John Jackson, Citizens Network on Waste Management. John has worked with citizens’ groups on environmental contamination, waste management, water quantity & quality issues, and citizen involvement & decision-making issues for the past 30 years.

is an initiative advocating for why health professionals need to take action on climate change. Why is this you ask?
Health professionals can be a crucial ally in communicating climate change to the public. Through their various touchpoints in all areas of the community, health professionals represent a trusted voice and interact with people who may not otherwise be engaged in climate change.

Adaptation versus mitigation?
Combatting climate change involves a combination of these approaches- reducing greenhouse gases and reducing the amount of gas trapped in the atmosphere by reducing the sources of these gases is only part of the story happening today. Adaptation is the act of reducing vulnerability to the affects of climate change by taking opportunity to prevent harm.

Did you know racism is a factor that puts groups at higher risk of being negatively affected by climate change? Racialized populations in large urban centres in Canada have less access to green space, while greenspaces are known to help mitigate these negative affects on our health.

Increasing a patient’s knowledge of the effects of climate change, including the negative impacts it can have on their health, is critical to combat climate change. Integrating climate and nature into health information will empower individuals to interact with nature more and be more engaged with solutions to climate change.

Climate change is the biggest global health threat of the 21st century. Health is and will be affected by the changing climate through direct impacts (heat waves, droughts, heavy storms, and sea-level rise), and indirect impacts (vector-borne and airways diseases, food and water insecurity, undernutrition, and forced displacements).
