Mental health isn’t just about what we’re dealing with individually — it’s also about how connected we feel to one another.

This May 4–10, CMHA’s Mental Health Week is calling on all of us to Come Together, Canada.

Through small, everyday actions of connection, we can strengthen mental health, reduce loneliness, and build healthier communities.
Because connection strengthens mental health.

As National Volunteer Week comes to a close, the momentum doesn’t have to.

This year’s theme, Ignite Volunteerism, reminds us that giving back isn’t just a moment—it’s something we can carry forward all year long.

Share your story.
If you’re a student, staff, or alumni who volunteers, consider sharing your experience with Volunteer Canada as part of their goal to highlight 365 volunteer stories during the International Year of Volunteers. Your story could be the spark that inspires someone else to get started. Here is the link: https://ivy26.ca/share-your-story/

Find your thing.
If you haven’t been volunteering, take a moment to think about what fulfills you. What do you care about? What brings you energy or purpose? That’s often where it begins. And if you’re not sure where to start, we’re here to help you explore opportunities and find the right fit.

Volunteering doesn’t have to be big to matter. It just has to begin.

What’s something you’re passionate about giving back to?

For Jorge, an IT Tier I Technician with NBCC’s IT Services team, it’s supporting youth and helping them grow through leadership and community.

As Jorge shares:

“I began volunteering with Sistema NB and quickly discovered the impact of supporting youth programs behind the scenes and helping communities thrive. I later found a strong sense of purpose with the Navy League Cadet Corps, where I now serve as a Cadet Instructor and am transitioning to a Navy League Officer—leading by example and helping create free, inclusive opportunities that empower youth to grow with confidence, responsibility, and a strong sense of belonging. Volunteering allows me to give back by supporting programs focused on leadership, discipline, and service. Having volunteer leave makes it possible for me to consistently commit my time and skills where they can truly make a lasting impact.”

What’s your thing? We’d love to hear how you’re giving back in your community.

In recognition of National Volunteer Week, we’re celebrating leaders who ignite volunteerism across our communities—like Aynslie, an instructor in our School of Arts, Community & Protective Services.

A lifelong volunteer, Aynslie doesn’t just give her time—she inspires others to step forward. From supporting Scouts Canada and the Canadian Progress Club Greater Moncton Women to leading initiatives like Bowl for Kids, she is a strong champion of volunteerism with both students and colleagues.

As Aynslie shares:

“Volunteering has always been part of my life, inspired by my parents, who led by example, and supported by my husband, Derek, who makes it possible for me to give back. I’ve never had just one ‘thing’; I simply step forward when help is needed. But finding the Canadian Progress Club Greater Moncton Women after COVID helped me rediscover my purpose: supporting women, children, and Special Olympics in ways that deeply matter to me.”

Her story reflects what happens when purpose meets action—volunteerism multiplies.

What’s something you’re passionate about sharing with others?

For Scott, an instructor with NBCC’s School of Engineering Technologies in Fredericton, it’s music.

He volunteers at the Meaningful Connections Adult Day Centre, bringing joy, connection, and comfort through music to those who attend.

As Scott shares:

“I’m grateful that NBCC provides an opportunity for me to volunteer and share my love of music with the lovely folks at Meaningful Connections Adult Day Centre. You don’t need to be super talented to brighten someone’s day, and it is a highlight of my day, too! Without NBCC’s support through its volunteer leave program, I would not be able to provide some musical therapy to this and other local groups where it is needed and appreciated.”

We believe volunteering creates meaningful impact—for both the people receiving support and those who give their time.

That’s why NBCC’s Employer Supported Volunteer Leave helps make it easier for staff to get involved, give back, and find their thing.

Since launching in January 2025, the Promise Partnership Moncton has already supported over 1,100 students—with 59 NBCC students and staff volunteering their time to make a difference.

NBCC volunteers are helping local youth feel supported, confident, and excited to learn. “NBCC volunteers add tremendous value through their dedication, diverse skill sets, and genuine passion for giving back. They help create an environment where younger students feel inspired, supported, and excited to learn alongside them.” — Maddison Bell, Program Manager, Promise Partnership Moncton.

As part of National Volunteer Week, we extend a heartfelt thank you to all NBCC students and staff who have volunteered with this program—you are making a meaningful impact in your community.

For the past three years, NBCC faculty in our Wesley Armour School of Business have made it an annual tradition to volunteer together at the Ronald McDonald House Family Room in Moncton, preparing and sharing meals with families staying there during some of their most difficult times.

This spring, they’re planning to return once again—continuing a tradition rooted in compassion, teamwork, and community care.

“Volunteering as a team at the Ronald McDonald House allows us to support families during an incredibly difficult time, even in a small way like sharing a homemade meal. This experience matters to us because it aligns so closely with the compassion and teamwork we strive to bring into our classrooms. Having volunteer leave and support from NBCC makes this meaningful work possible and truly valued.” — NBCC Instructor, reflecting on behalf of the team.

Through NBCC’s Employer Supported Volunteer Leave, staff are able to give back in ways that connect to their passions and bring them fulfillment, while finding their thing through meaningful community engagement.

As part of National Volunteer Week, we celebrate and thank all NBCC staff for the many ways they are helping to strengthen communities—year after year—through volunteering.
