The second Feminist Lunch of fall 2026 will take place Oct. 30th at 12:30pm in the Harriet Irving Library, room 303, on UNB Campus in Fredericton featuring Valerya Edelman.

The talk is titled: “The Other Side of Privacy & Convenience: A Discourse Analysis of Justificatory Strategies to Reduce Abortion Care”.
Abstract: This presentation discusses how discourse around abortion in NB, seeped in neoliberal feminism and supported by governments who want to control women and gender nonconforming bodies, has steered discussions away from removing barriers and reproductive justice for all. I analyzed 86 articles form 2014-2023 where the discourse concerned: abortion care as a marketplace good; medication abortions: ease for prescribers; and medication abortions as more “normal” than a surgical procedures. A “truly private and personal decision” can be empowering and lifesaving, but the elevation of privacy can prevent improving on abortion care delivery and addressing socially and politically sanctioned anti-abortion sentiments. Reproductive justice advocates must work together, in solidarity, for all voices to be heard and understood.

Valerya (Val) Edelman is Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Work at St. Thomas University. They hold a Master of Social Work from the University of Victoria and a Bachelor of Social Work from the University of British Columbia. They have worked in mental health and addictions since 1998, especially as a Social worker and mental health and addiction counselor, specializing in supporting LGBTQQIA2S+ individuals who are marginalized, use substances, or are under-housed. For 10 years, they also helped build and manage operations for Clinic 554, providing comprehensive primary care, reproductive health, gender-affirming care, and harm-reduction services

The Feminist Lunch Series is organized by: UNB/STU University Women’s Centre, UNB Gender & Women’s Studies Program, UNB Libraries and UNB Alumnae association.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the case for some people in Canada when they are seeking abortion care. Many people experience barriers based on the language they speak, their immigration status, and their race.

We recently met with an expert from the United Nations to discuss racism in our healthcare system, including access to abortion and maternal healthcare.

Les personnes qui appellent peuvent être invitées à laisser un message vocal. Elles seront ensuite rappelées pendant les heures d’ouverture (de 8 h 30 à 15 h, du lundi au vendredi).

Chaque personne du Nouveau-Brunswick mérite des soins de santé procréative accessibles et opportuns. Ce service vise à en faciliter l’accès et à mieux coordonner les démarches.
