The Muriel McQueen Fergusson Centre for Family Violence Research (MMFC) has a mandate to promote interdisciplinary research aimed at understanding, treating and preventing family violence and violence against women and children. Located at the University of New Brunswick, under the Faculty of Arts, the strength of MMFC relies on the collaborations between academic and community members. Our Focus:

a) Conduct and encourage practice and policy-relevant research on family violence and violence against women and children
b) Focus on the dissemination of research findings to various target groups to influence policies or practices
c) Develop and offer targeted educational programs

The research agenda of the MMFC is continually evolving. The MMFC always welcomes suggestions for new research projects. Individuals or groups who are interested in conducting research under the auspices of the MMFC are encouraged to contact the Director or Associate Director. More information is available at our website. Key Messages:
The MMFC envisions itself as part of the solution to family violence in Atlantic Canada and beyond. It recognizes the contributions and perspectives of survivors and centralizes their voices in pursuing change. It recognizes that the landscape is always shifting and we must be flexible, and sometimes vulnerable, as we shift with it. The work of the Muriel McQueen Fergusson Centre is made possible through an ongoing partnership between the Fergusson Foundation & the University of New Brunswick.

Congratulations to Paige Thompson, a UNBF BA student pursuing an honours in Sociology and certificate in Family Violence Issues, on presenting her research on Mary Wollstonecraft vs. the “Manosphere” at the Canadian Sociological Association's annual conference at Dalhousie University in Halifax this week.

Paige was one of very few undergraduate students accepted to present their research at the conference. Here is a partial abstract of her paper: “From Mary Wollstonecraft’s A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, to the pseudoscientific claims of the manosphere community, the notion that biological s*x determines social value and gender roles remains a powerful force. Mary Wollstonecraft’s argument that notions of biological determinism led to men placing themselves in a social position above women, proves to still be rampant through the manosphere further enforcing the hierarchy she critiqued. Wollstonecraft's highlighted how notions of biological determinism influenced socialization through conversation with theorists like Jean-Jacques Rousseau who perpetuated social order based on physical differences.”

Well done, Paige!!🙌🤩

Join us on Wednesday, June 17th, as the AVA Webinar Series presents GBV and Disability Justice: Moving Toward Collective Liberation, featuring Dr. Stefanie Hunt-Kennedy and Dr. Yvonne Simpson from the Muriel McQueen Fergusson Centre for Family Violence Research at the University of New Brunswick.

🗓️ Wednesday, June 17th, 2026

⏰ 12 – 1:30pm MST

In June 2025, the Government of New Brunswick joined other provinces in declaring gender-based violence (GBV) both an epidemic and a systemic issue. Disabled women and girls are up to three times more likely to experience GBV than their non-disabled peers, yet the significance of this disparity is often obscured by limited or confusing information in a climate focused on setting priorities for action. This webinar seeks to clarify these complexities and deepen understanding of the intersections between GBV and disability. Drs. Yvonne Simpsn and Stefanie Hunt-Kennedy will examine ableism as a form of structural power and privilege, demonstrating its central role in shaping the prevalence of GBV and the barriers faced by disabled women and girls in accessing support, safety, and justice.

About the Speakers

Dr. Yvonne Simpson (she/her) is an educator, researcher, and disability justice practitioner whose work uses intersectionality, critical race theory, and critical disability studies to examine gaps in gender-based violence research. As the Purdy Crawford/TD Bank Postdoctoral Fellow in Accessibility at UNB/MMFC, she is leading a project on barriers to healthcare access for disabled people in New Brunswick, with a focus on the experiences of disabled women.

Dr. Stefanie Hunt-Kennedy (she/her) is a Professor of History and Director of the Muriel McQueen Fergusson Centre for Family Violence Research at the University of New Brunswick. Her award-winning interdisciplinary research explores the intersections of disability, gender, race, and violence. Her current work focuses on reimagining s*x education in New Brunswick as a strategy for preventing gender-based violence.
