WHAT IS YMCA SUMMER WORK STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAM?
Hi folks! The YMCA Summer Work Student Exchange Program (SWSE) is currently recruiting participants for our summer 2022 program. The SWSE program is a national 6-week exchange program for youth aged 16-17 where youth will travel to another community in Canada, live and work in their second official language, and have the chance to contribute to impactful work in communities across the country. Youth will stay with a host family while on their exchange and we encourage the family of the youth to be able to host another youth in their home where possible. Youth are still able to apply for a position in the exchange if their family is unable to host but, in that case, there must be an alternative host available to host another youth in their care for the duration of the program.
WHAT WILL I GET OUT OF THE PROGRAM?
- Get paid work experience (up to $2500 over the period of the exchange!!)
- Travel to Quebec and practice French language skills
- Enjoy fun activities and get exposed to a different culture
- Build valuable work, communication, and independence skills for the future
- Memories that will last a lifetime!
- The YMCA SWSE program is recognized in the Fredericton area school district as a course credit in their high school as Techniques de Communication 120!
HOW CAN I BECOME INVOLVED AS A YOUTH?
- Will you be 16-17 years old by July 2nd, 2022?
- Are you eligible to work in Canada?
- Do you have basic French language skills?
- Do you live in Fredericton or surrounding areas?
- Would you be interested in an exchange to Quebec over the summer?
- Would your family be able to host another youth for the duration of the exchange? (If not, we still encourage you to apply. Please specify reasoning on your application)
- Are you/will you be vaccinated against COVID-19 prior to June 18th?
If you’ve answered yes to these questions, we would love to invite you to apply to our program!
CAN I BE A HOST/ALTERNATE FAMILY?
- All host families must have basic skills in French
- Have an adult in the host family home overnight and on weekends
- There is an interview, reference, and security check prior to being accepted as a host family
YOUR ROLE AS A HOST FAMILY
- Provide lodging and meals for the youth on exchange
- Provide adult supervision evenings and overnight
- You are NOT tour guides, babysitters, or taxi services to the youth on exchange
If you or anyone you know is interested in applying to the YMCA SWSE program as a participant, host family, or alternate host family, we encourage you to apply! Any question can be sent to the area’s local coordinator Tory Desroche (she/her) at [email protected]
