💙💛 Happy Vyshyvanka Day!

Today we celebrate! Yes, celebrate! Our culture! Our resilience!

Some of us gathered at City Hall to raise our flag. Many more wore their vyshyvankas to work, to school, in their communities.

Together, we joined millions of Ukrainians around the world — each one saying: Ukraine is alive.

Thank you to Mayor Kate Rogers, and Benoît Bourque, Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, for standing with us today. Special thank you to all our elected officials at the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick who stood with us, who wore our pin, who said yes to this moment.

Thank you to everyone who wore their vyshyvanka with pride.

Every stitch carries our history.

As we continue our fight, don’t forget what we fight for!

Slava Ukraini. 🇺🇦

🕯️ 40 Years Since Chornobyl. We Remember.

Today, April 26, marks 40 years since the worst civilian nuclear disaster in history unfolded at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant in northern Ukraine.

At 1:23 in the morning on April 26, 1986, a botched safety test triggered a catastrophic explosion in reactor four. The blast sent an enormous plume of radioactive smoke into the atmosphere, and nuclear fuel burned for more than 10 days as helicopters dumped thousands of tonnes of sand, clay and lead in a desperate attempt to smother the fire.
Large quantities of radioactive substances were released and dispersed by wind across large parts of Europe. Pripyat — a city of 48,000 people, home to the plant’s workers and their families — was abandoned virtually overnight and remains a ghost town to this day.

The human cost was staggering and deeply Ukrainian. About 600,000 “liquidators” — soldiers, firefighters, engineers, miners, and medics — were mobilized from across the Soviet Union to contain and clean up the disaster. Their tasks ranged from sealing the exposed reactor core to scrubbing radioactive dust from buildings and roads. Many had little understanding of the dangers they faced, sent in with improvised protective gear, acting out of a sense of duty.

This week, surviving liquidators returned to Chornobyl to honour their fallen comrades. One of them, Oleksii Harbuz, said: “This 40th anniversary represents both a deep tragedy and a vital chance to reunite with my brothers-in-arms. So many of our colleagues have passed away over the years, but those of us remaining hold on.”

Today, the disaster carries renewed urgency. Ukraine is commemorating this anniversary amid fears that Russia’s ongoing war could spark a repeat of history — with Kyiv reporting that Moscow has repeatedly sent missiles and drones on a flight path near the plant, even damaging a critical protective shield last year.

Forty years later, Chornobyl is not just history. It is a warning about the price of secrecy, the courage of ordinary people, and the ongoing vulnerability of a country still under attack.

We remember the liquidators. We remember the people of Pripyat. We stand with Ukraine. 🇺🇦

On March 14-15, we hosted an important initiative for our community - Mobile Consular Services.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the Embassy of Ukraine in Canada | Посольство України в Канаді and especially Consul Nadiya Kostenko for making this visit possible and for their dedicated, tireless work supporting Ukrainians across the region.

These sessions are not just helpful - they are critical.
For many families in New Brunswick, this was an opportunity to apply for or renew Ukrainian travel passports locally, without the need to travel to Ottawa. For families balancing work, childcare, and financial constraints, such travel is often simply not feasible. Bringing these services closer to the community removes a significant barrier and ensures access to essential documentation.

Why does this matter so much - especially now?
As many Ukrainians in Canada are here under the CUAET program, they rely on temporary immigration measures. With the upcoming March 31, 2026 deadline to apply for work permit extensions, having a valid Ukrainian travel passport is not optional - it is essential.
Without a valid passport, individuals may not be able to extend their work permits, which directly impacts their ability to work, support their families, and continue building their lives in Canada.
After more than four years since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, many families still cannot safely return home. Yet, their future here remains uncertain, as current immigration pathways are temporary. As this deadline approaches, the urgency and importance of accessible consular services cannot be overstated.

This successful session would not have been possible without the stellar planning and organization led by Oksana Tesla and Roman Tesla, along with the incredible dedication of our volunteers. Special thanks to Viktoria Leshchenko, Alex Hunchyk, Tetiana Deorditsa, Oleksandr Drahuntsov, Stas Arzhevitov, Dmytro Lysenok, Anastasiia Bida and Mykola Kyrychuk for contributing their time, energy, and care to support our community.

Together, we continue to stand with and support Ukrainians in New Brunswick - ensuring they have access to the services they need, when they need them most.

Four years.

We were not looking forward to being here for the fourth year in a row.

Yet, here we are.

Yesterday, we gathered once again in front of the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick to mark another anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Not an anniversary that is celebrated - but one that must be remembered.

We gathered to remind the world that the war in Ukraine is not over.
It is still raging - and in many ways, even more intensely.

We gathered to honour those who lost their lives in this unjustified aggression - and to stand with those who continue to defend not only Ukraine’s independence, but the democratic values that protect us all.

The sobering and powerful speech was delivered by the President of the Ukrainian Association, Oksana Tesla, who reminded everyone that behind every statistic are real people, real lives, real families. Her words grounded the evening in truth, humanity, and moral clarity. Thank you, Oksana, for organizing such an important gathering and for consistently advocating for our community with strength and dignity.

We are deeply grateful to the representatives of the Government of New Brunswick who stood with us - Hon. Jean-Claude D’Amours, Minister responsible for Military Affairs, who delivered remarks; Benoît Bourque, Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, who also addressed the gathering; Marco LeBlanc, Government House Leader, for his presence and support.

Your solidarity and support matters.

A heartfelt thank you to Sheila Ross - speaking from her personal experience, but also representing many Canadian families who opened their homes and hearts to Ukrainians fleeing war. Because of people likeSheila, New Brunswick - and Fredericton - have truly become a second home for so many.

And special thank you to our Ukrainian community members and to New Brunswickers who did not stay in their warm, cozy homes this evening, but chose to stand together - united in remembrance and resolve.

Raising the Ukrainian flag in front of the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick is more than symbolic.

It is a declaration.

That democracy matters.
That freedom matters.
That justice matters.

Ukraine continues to stand.

And so do we.

Slava Ukraini. 🇺🇦

Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred.
They stepped into the streets to defend freedom and the nation’s right to live in a democratic society. Unarmed civilians, standing for dignity, were brutally killed in the heart of Kyiv.

The fight that began in 2013–2014 continues to this day.

We remember. 🤍
