A Lion Remembered, Lion Richard Buchanan
Lion Richard started his service to the community in the Barker’s Pt Lions Club in 1976 and after transferring to the Nashwaaksis Lions Club he continued his service to the community. His commitment to the Club was impressive. He served on the executive in positions of President, Treasurer, Director and almost every other position with the exception of secretary. He chaired many committees, Bingo, Monte Carlo, and Community Assistance to name a few.
Lion Richard was a compassionate individual who took serving his community seriously. He was “Mr. Bingo” who took the club Bingo from the hall to the Exhibition Centre vastly improving the financial resources to meet needs in the community. He has brought many people into the club including two members of his family. He felt that bring in anyone who is interested, some will leave but the true community spirted individuals would stay. He was a mentor to many in the club. He had a vast knowledge of procedures, past experiences that has been invaluable to many members and Presidents.
Lion Richard was also an entrepreneur. He brought projects such as the High School Entrepreneur Competition, Nashwaaksis Lions Read and Roar that provide reading materials to young readers, and Leo Hayes High School Scholarship criteria for selecting deserving individuals.
Lion Richard was definitely an organizer. He arranged many self-funded golf retreat trips for members. He worked on getting the addition to the club funded, the solar panels on the roof and many other projects.
Lion Richard was a modest man who gave selflessly to the community. The Nashwaaksis Lions Club has awarded Lion Richard, the Melvin Jones Fellow, Progressive Melvin Jones Fellow, the highest awards in Lions with funding going to Lions International that in turn help people in need worldwide; Jude Brian Stevenson Fellow, the highest award in Canada with funding going to Guide Dogs for individuals with disabilities to receive guide dogs at no cost to them, empowering their independence, safety, and confidence. He was also awarded Life Member in Lions Foundation of Canada.
He was a remarkable individual who gave much to better his community. He was a very valued member of the Nashwaaksis Lions Club. His contributions to the club helped make many successful projects. Lion Richard will live on in those who lives he touched by his mentorship, friendship, and commitment to his community.

Canada Day was a great success. There were many people around enjoying the very hot sunny day. The Canada Cake donated by The Atlantic Super Store on Smythe was a great hit! The club got many comments on the fact that the organizing group would not allow the Club to sell water in Officer's Square. If you were one of those people, perhaps a call to your counselor to express those views would help in future years and with other functions that occur at Officer's Square.

During the past Lionistic year we have had three members who benefitted from the tender care of Fredericton Hospice House. The families of those members also received the care that they needed as they experienced the passing of their loved ones. The Nashwaaksis Lions Club saw the important contribution that Fredericton Hospice House makes to the community and donated $5000 for a gold leaf on their Memorial Tree.

What a night with Radio Bingo! Three loonie pots went to lucky players. With three numbers per pot, it is not unusual to have at least two go nightly. Then Jason got very lucky on the 48th number to win the $10,000 jackpot. Jason is a regular player who plans to take his family on a trip!
