🔥 As BC’s wildfire season grows longer with consistently high levels of burned landscape, forest professionals are increasingly looking at how to manage fire on the landscape to help keep communities safe and maintain resilient forests and grasslands.

Controlled burning is one way to protect communities, cultural values, and resource values. But controlled burning can take different forms.

Explore how diverse fire knowledge — such as Indigenous fire stewardship, operational experience, land management practices, and policy perspectives — can inform and improve prescribed burning outcomes, in "Perspectives on Fire as a Land Management Tool: Prescribed and Cultural Burning," a breakout session at the Forest Professionals BC conference.

This session aims to increase understanding of the role of beneficial fire in landscape management, including ecological and cultural objectives, as well as examine how changing climate conditions and evolving wildfire risk influence opportunities, constraints, and strategic planning for the reintroduction of responsible fire use.

Join Tallgrass Prairie and Oak Savanna Fire Science Consortium and Great Plains Fire Science for their "Meet the Researcher" webinar with Dr. Devan McGranahan, USDA ARS, on February 5. Dr. McGranahan will cover "The Ecology of Summer Prescribed Fire Regimes in the Northern Great Plains."

In this new, data-light, discussion-heavy format, Dr. McGranahan will discuss his research into understanding how modern prescribed fire regimes look ecologically. He’ll draw from two recent papers in which he 1. Looked at whether historical trends in fuel moisture/greenness and fire weather allowed for prescribed burns in summer, and 2. compared prescribed fire burn severity to burn severity in wildfires. The intent is to spend more time discussing outcomes and applications than traditional research webinars and make more space for our audience to ask questions.

It’s not usually flame fronts that cause homes to catch fire or get damaged in wildfires. 90% of the time, it’s embers. These embers can cause leaves and needles in gutters or on roofs, trees too close to a building, a roof with peeling shingles or made of material that can easily catch fire, or other things that burn closeby to catch fire. Then, it can cause the building to light up.

For you, that means you really can reduce the risk of damage at your place with simple steps – like cleaning your gutter, mowing your lawn, and moving anything that burns at least 10 metres away from your house.

🔥Prescribed fire is the planned use of fire under predetermined weather and fuel prescriptions and is used as a land management tool to obtain ecological objectives and restoration goals. CAFMS and our partners are utilizing controlled burning as a forest management tool to promote oak regeneration, reduce hazardous fuels, remove non-native or invasive species, and promote a diverse mosaic forest structure of native species. The forests that we see today have drastically shifted in their composition towards a less fire adapted, more mesic, forest structure. Land managers are using low-intensity fire to promote the regeneration of oak trees, as this is a top priority across the Appalachians.

Putting fire on the Appalachian landscape on a broad scale could not be done without inter-agency cooperation. Our partners have instilled their trust within us and we have instilled our trust within them. The humbling effects of these relationships can be seen on the ground as the forests begin to shift towards our shared ecological goals and in the smiles that are exchanged on burn days with our fire family.
