This weeks is Keeping the Books - The life and times of a Peace River Homesteader’s Daughter by Ross Peck accompanied by One Inch From Disaster - True Tales from the Wilds of British Columbia by Kelly Randall Ricketts.

Following Arlene Darnall (Peck) from Fort St. John through her life through WWII as part of the Royal Canadian Airforce to opening the first school in Haines Junction AK, and to developing the Trutch Lodge at Mile 200 along the Alaska Highway with husband Don Peck. We follow Arlene through her life as a true pioneer of the North through her notes, photos and documents collected by son Ross Peck.

Pronounced ta-WOW, this cookbook was curated by Shane as someone who has pulled from shared and gathered knowledge of his Indigenous ancestry as well as his childhood on the Albertan farms. The is Brian Salmond. Brian designs handcrafted birdhouses, carved and assembled out of 100% reclaimed woods (spruce, cedar, diamond willow, old backboard!). Rocks collected from the Muskwa and Dawson City make up miniature walkways or fire pits, No. 15 torque-headed screws fasten down the birdhouses to allow for easy removal and cleaning of the interiors: well hollowed-out and raised to minimize chance of water accumulation. Seal and secure the moisture in the wood once every three years during the springtime with a lin(flax)seed or mineral oil to maintain lustre and longevity while braving the elements.
