Slicks Car Club of Fort McMurray

Slicks Car Club of Fort McMurray Slicks Car Club of Fort McMurray is a group of local car and motor enthusiasts. Fort McMurray has always enjoyed a # # # following of automobile enthusiasts.

Throughout the years it enjoyed some drag racing on the old airport road, circle track racing at the Supertest Hill track, and some mud bogging in a field where the Super 8 is today. This support became formalized in the late 1980’s with the creation of the Cruizin Classics Car Club. Shows were held at the Thickwood Arena and MacIsland to the mid 1990’s when the Club ceased to exist. Several year

s passed and there were ad hoc shows held at the Legion and elsewhere but no recurring venue existed for folks to get together and share their passion for automobiles. In 1997 10 close friends got together and created a new club in Fort McMurray. Inaugural meetings were held at the Bob Lamb center and the initial 10 quickly grew to a following of 35 then to 50. After many lively discussions, the Club was named “Slick’s Car Club”. A second decision was made to not incorporate. The initial Club meetings were held on a monthly basis throughout the summer and get to-gethers were Wednesday nights at the downtown Tim Hortons. As popularity grew and space shrunk, a move was made to the Thickwood Tim Hortons/Medical Center later followed by a move to the Thickwood A&W which was in support of their national Wednesday night cruises. The Club supported and participated in various shows at Blueberry Festival, Spring Show/Shine with the Harley Owners Group and some members participated in various annual parades. In 2008, there was also the “Take a Senior For a Ride”. This turned out to be as much fun for the members as it was for the seniors ;-)

The Club was formed to foster and support a network of enthusiasts that would enjoy some social time and where fitting enable the exchange of information/parts/help/support. That spirit has endured since inception and can be seen by the quantity and quality of the cars appearing on Wednesdays at A&W. Members enthusiasm and support for community events was evident every year and continues to show by numbers attending the Wednesday night get to-gethers over the summer. While there are still many of the original 10 members, in McMurray, much of the membership has changed but numbers remain high and there are always new participants coming while others move on. Just goes to show how strong support is for the Club. We encourage anyone with a cool ride to show up, join the club, or just come on out and see the car's.
