Our elders were here first. 💚

They helped build our community, supported our families, and created spaces where generations could grow together. Today, honouring them means more than showing kindness. It means recognizing their right to connection, companionship, and belonging.

This week, choose one simple act:
📞 Call an elder you haven’t spoken to in a while.
🚗 Offer a ride to someone who finds it difficult to get out.
💬 Sit with an elder and listen to their story.
🤝 Bring along a senior who may be spending too much time alone.

Small gestures can make a meaningful difference. No elder in our community should have to feel forgotten or alone.

The first year of motherhood can hold so much love, but it can also feel lonely, overwhelming, and heavier than anyone prepared you for.

Postpartum mental health matters. Crying, anxiety, numbness, intrusive thoughts, or struggling to feel connected are not things you have to hide or carry alone. Support is available, and reaching out is a sign of strength.

Even Maryam (AS), one of the most honoured women in Islam, expressed a moment of profound distress. Her words were preserved in the Qur’an, reminding us that experiencing hardship does not make you ungrateful.

For new mothers, and for the people around them: check in, bring the food, offer practical help, listen without judgment, and make sure she knows she is not alone. 💚

Grief doesn’t follow a timeline.

The first days may bring visitors, calls, food, and comforting words, but grief often remains long after everyone else has returned to their routines.

Some days may feel manageable. Others may bring memories, anger, guilt, or sadness without warning. There is no “right” way or schedule for grieving.

Say their name. Give sadaqah in their memory. Accept support when you need it. And when words are difficult, simply sitting with someone can be enough.

Two masjids. Forty years. One community built through faith, generosity, and perseverance. 🕌

From the founding of Markaz ul Islam in 1984, to the opening of the Gordon Avenue masjid in 1989, the beginning of the uptown project in 2007, and the opening of 109 Abraham Place in 2018, every milestone tells a story of people coming together to build something lasting.

These spaces were built by ordinary families who gave what they could, volunteered their time, and believed in creating a home for generations to come.

Today, we honour those who came before us, and recognize that we are now responsible for carrying their legacy forward.

Markaz ul Islam recognises Treaty 8 and the importance of continuing to learn what it means to honour the commitments and relationships that treaties represent.

Allah reminds us that ease is not only waiting at the end of a difficult journey, it can be present within the hardship itself, through patience, faith, support, and unexpected blessings.

Back-to-school season can bring excitement, but for some children, it can also bring worry, fear, or hesitation. 💚

When your child says, “I don’t want to go back to school,” there may be more behind those words than we realize. Bullying, academic struggles, loneliness, adjusting to a new language, or simply feeling safer at home can all play a role.

Start with curiosity. Ask gentle questions, listen without rushing to fix the problem, and give them space to tell you what’s really going on.

At Markaz Ul Islam, we offer family and parenting support, along with confidential check-ins for young people.
