The UCP government will table legislation today to force teachers back to work. They want to impose a contract identical to the offer teachers have rejected twice – in overwhelming numbers.
In doing so, the UCP is taking the unprecedented step of using the ‘notwithstanding clause’ to override Albertans’ Charter rights to bargain our wages and working conditions.
The UCP is going so far as to change the rules of the Alberta Legislature to ram this bill through tonight, just hours after the public gets a look at it. If Danielle Smith gets her way, we will have lost our rights by breakfast tomorrow.
THIS IS NO LONGER JUST ABOUT TEACHERS – if the UCP gets away with using the notwithstanding clause, they will use it again the next time any group of public sector workers chooses to strike.
If a group of CUPE health care workers, municipal workers, social service workers even threaten to take job action – governments will impose the notwithstanding clause.
We are in close contact with teachers and with other unions about our next steps. CUPE will support the teachers in any action they choose to take. We will always stand up for working people and our rights to free and fair collective bargaining.
