McMurray Métis District Council, leadership, and Citizens recently visited Suncor’s Base Plant on two separate occasions to learn more about reclamation and Suncor’s plans for tailings water treatment, including a tour of its pilot plant.

Both visits were filled with questions, thoughtful discussion, and challenging conversations. We appreciated the opportunity to see the work firsthand, learn more about the technology being tested, and better understand Suncor’s approach to tailings water treatment and reclamation.

These conversations aren’t always easy, but they are important. Asking difficult questions, sharing perspectives, and continuing to engage are essential to building a better understanding of the impacts and opportunities associated with oil sands development, and what the future may hold for our lands and waters.

Thank you to the Suncor team for hosting us, and to our citizens who took the time to participate, ask questions, and engage in open dialogue.

We look forward to continuing the conversation.

Reconnect with the Land Through Traditional Knowledge 🌲✨

Join us for a meaningful Traditional Experience as we slow down, step onto the land, and learn from one of nature's most valuable gifts, the spruce tree.

Together, we'll take a medicine walk, and make spruce gum salve to take home while learning about the many uses of the entire tree, from roots to needles, and the knowledge that has been passed down through generations.

The experience will conclude with a sharing circle, where Claire will invite participants to share their own stories, teachings, and family knowledge, recognizing that everyone has something meaningful to contribute.

This is more than a workshop, t's an opportunity to connect with the land, learn traditional practices, and help keep this knowledge alive for future generations.

Corissa Critch has proudly served as McMurray Métis' Citizenship Coordinator since August 2023. A proud McMurray Métis Citizen, Corissa was raised in both Fort McMurray and Plamondon and is passionate about supporting fellow Citizens and strengthening community connections.

As a Commissioner of Oaths, Corissa assists Citizens with Otipemisiwak Métis Government and McMurray Métis citizenship applications, harvester applications, and a variety of administrative services. She also plays an important role in coordinating community programming, including Cards & Connection, Wellness Warriors, and Bannock & Jammer, while serving as the administrative assistant to the McMurray Métis Bursary Committee.

Indigenous Infrastructure. Incredible Investment.

McMurray Métis District Council and Cultural Centre Project Director and Infinity Métis Corporation President & CEO Shawn Myers were pleased to welcome Alberta’s Minister of Infrastructure Martin Long and MLA Tany Yao for a tour of the McMurray Métis Cultural Centre.

The Cultural Centre is more than a building. It is an investment in cultural preservation, tourism, education and economic opportunity, creating a destination where Albertans and visitors from across the country can experience authentic Métis culture and connect with the stories of our people and this region.

This is economic reconciliation in action, Indigenous-led infrastructure creating lasting value for the Wood Buffalo region and Alberta.
