Today we acknowledge National Indigenous People’s Day.
National Indigenous People’s Day is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the rich cultures and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples from across Canada. We acknowledge their impacts that have shaped – and continue to shape – our country. Today is a chance to learn, listen, and reflect on the stories, knowledge, art, and traditions that have been shared for generations.
What can you do to acknowledge National Indigenous People’s Day today?
- Learn about the Indigenous Peoples whose traditional territories you live and work on. The Multicultural Association of Wood Buffalo and our region is on Treaty 8 Territory, the shared traditional lands of the Cree, Dene, and the unceded territory of the Metis people. We offer our sincerest gratitude and respect to the original and continued stewards of this land.
- Read books, articles, or stories written by Indigenous authors and storytellers.
- Explore Indigenous art, music, film, and cultural exhibits.
- Attend local community events, performances, workshops, or celebrations that are open to the public.
- Take time to learn about Indigenous languages and the importance they hold within communities.
- Support Indigenous-owned businesses, artists, and creators.
- Listen to Indigenous voices and perspectives with openness and respect.
Let us celebrate the diversity, resilience, creativity, and rich cultural heritage of Indigenous Peoples as we continue building connections through learning, respect and community.
