World Mental Health Day takes place every year on October 10 to spotlight mental health around the world, and act as a reminder that every girl deserves to feel supported, heard and understood.

Sometimes mental health looks like asking for help.
Sometimes mental health looks like taking a break.
Sometimes mental health looks like saying, “I’m not okay today.”

This World Mental Health Day, we’re reminding girls that their feelings matter, their voices matter and they never have to navigate life alone.

Let’s keep creating spaces where girls can talk, be heard and take care of themselves without shame.

The ✍️ Nobel Prize in Literature ✍️ was awarded to Canadian poet and essayist Anne Carson by the Swedish Academy in Stockholm on October 8.

The Nobel Prize in Literature is the world's most prestigious literary award, given annually to honour an author's entire body of work.

She was coding before “coding” was even a thing. 🤯

Ada Lovelace is often recognized as the world’s first computer programmer, and she imagined possibilities for machines long before modern computers existed.

Her story is a reminder that innovation starts with something simple:

What if we tried something new?
What if we looked at a problem differently?
What if we imagined something that didn’t exist yet?

Girls deserve opportunities to ask those questions and the space to turn their ideas into something real.

On the National Day of Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, we honour the lives of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people and stand with their families, loved ones and communities.

Sisters in Spirit Day serves as a time for reflection, awareness, and advocacy. Gatherings are held across the country to provide space to remember, reflect and raise awareness, and many people honour the day in their own individual way.

At Girls Inc., we believe every girl deserves to feel safe, valued, heard and supported, and that creating a safer future starts with listening, learning and taking action.

October is Women’s History Month, a time to celebrate the women and girls who challenged expectations, opened doors and changed what was possible for those who came after them.

From scientists and activists to artists, athletes, leaders and innovators, women have been making history in big ways and small. And here’s the best part: history isn’t finished.

After nearly eight years of leadership, Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta Executive Director Nanase Tonda will be stepping down from her role, effective November 16, 2026. Read the full news release https://tinyurl.com/msk98pyf.

Since 2019, Nanase has helped grow Girls Inc.’s reach across the region while championing opportunities for girls and young women to be strong, smart and bold. Her leadership has strengthened programs, partnerships and the organization’s voice in the community, creating more opportunities for girls to build confidence and find their voices.

The Board of Directors and staff are deeply grateful to Nanase for her leadership, advocacy and vision, and for the lasting impact she has made in the lives of girls across our region.

Thank you, Nanase, for everything you have done to help girls be strong, smart and bold. We wish you all the best in what comes next.
