Right about now, those fitness resolutions start to get harder to stick to. It’s so much easier to hide on the couch with a warm blanket, doom scrolling on the phone…. but that’s not helping with those goals. We’ve got a great boost to help with seeing it through!

The Northern Lights Triathlon Club is inviting new members for our 2025 season! Come build your fitness with a group of like minded team mates! There’s no obligation to race in a triathlon, and all fitness levels are welcome!

Membership with us costs $300 per year, plus a Tri AB membership (that’s insurance) that costs about $85. What does that get you?
- Access to approximately 94 coached swim classes, for skills from beginner to advanced
- Approximately 45 uncoached, long course swim sessions
- Around 50 coached spin classes (spin in winter only, we bike outside in the summer)
- Weekly coaches track workouts for running
- Summer group bike rides
That works out to a value of about $2 a class for a year worth of coached training.

Now add….
- Weekly socials after Thursday night swim, to celebrate our achievements for the week
- Roughly monthly themed pot luck social dinners
- Several local coaches that can help with all sorts of training questions
- Loads of encouragement to come out and participate!

We’re one of the best value fitness groups in town! Come on out, give Tri a Try!

Last coached swim of the week, and social tonight! Come on out!

Not listed here, we also have a reserved lane Sunday mornings, 9-10am, and it’s usually long course 50m swim! No coached workout Sunday!

Come swim with us! We’re the only adult swim club in town!

Tuesday and Thursday, 730-830pm, Mac island. No Mac island membership required, and we’re offering this week’s practices for free! Meet us at the adult hot tub about 720-725, obviously wear a swimsuit, bring goggles and a swim cap if you have them. We have swim caps if you want one. Message us and we’ll share a door code for access to the changeroom for the swim

You DON’T need to be a strong swimmer or in amazing shape, we have programming for all levels. We ask that you be capable of swimming 25m unaided for your safety, using any stroke.

We also enjoy a hot tub after swim, and a social on Thursdays! Location tbd during the swim each week.

2025 NLTC Training Schedule

Monday- Spin, 730-830pm, MacDonald Island Studio Room
Tuesday- Swim, 730-830pm, MacDonald Island Pool
Wednesday- Spin, 730-830pm, MacDonald Island Track spin pocket. This is followed by an optional Brick run 830-900pm
Thursday- Swim, 730-830pm, MacDonald Island Pool. Thursday swim is followed by Social (out for a bit of food, drink and conversation), location changes weekly, determined by those attending. We all have work so social is typically wrapped up by 10-1030pm

You DO NOT need to have experience of a high fitness level for any of our training sessions, and you don’t need to plan on doing a full triathlon. You don’t need to come to every class, none of our members can attend every single thing! We’re a social club that does some triathlon training as a common interest!

Spin: bring clean sneakers or bike shoes with spd clips if you own them, a water bottle and a small towel. Padded bike shorts are also suggested! Wednesday spin upstairs you’ll need a gate code, message the club or ask the front desk and they’ll provide it. Show up 5-10 min before the class and we’ll make sure you have a bike set up properly.

Swim: obviously wear a swimsuit, bring goggles, and a swim cap if you have it. We have extra swim caps to give out if anyone wants/needs one. We meet up at the adult hot tub 5-10min before class. If you also have fins, paddles or a pool buoy you’re welcome to bring those too. We have workouts and practice for all levels, asking only that participants be able to swim 1 length (25m) using any method, unassisted. Access to the change room requires a code, reach out to the club for that.

For those interested, we’ll hold an indoor, low pressure Try a Tri this season as well.

No MacDonald island membership is required to participate in NLTC training events. Another post will explain how to access an NLTC membership, with our first 2 weeks being offered for a free trial.

This crew kicked off 2025 on the right foot with the Resolution Run! I think I counted 40 in the video!

Thank you to Szymon for the photos, and to the Ptarmigan Nordic Ski club for opening the cabin and having hot chocolate, coffee and cookies for us after the run!

Congratulations to everyone for the great start to the year! See you at Spin class Monday!

Need something to train for over the dark days of winter? How about a fun spring Sprint Triathlon?

Beat the Base was a fun event in 2024, with 6 athletes from the NLTC heading down to challenge the base and earn our dog tags … er, medals! Swim 800yards in the fast 25yard lane pool, bike on the old Namao base runway, then run on a great, single loop asphalt trail that winds out and back to the north of the base.

Need some help with the training? Come to a swim or spin class and hit up one of the local club coaches, we can help you build a plan! Need help with technique, or some training buddies? We’ve got your back there too!
