Series Unto Others…
SCRIPTURE READING: 1st. Kings 21:1-29
Text: "But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it." (1Timothy 6:6-7).
This week's reflection focuses on King Ahab and Naboth's Vineyard.
King Ahab of Israel coveted Naboth's vineyard, which was near his palace. Ahab offered to buy the vineyard or trade it for a better one, but Naboth refused, citing his ancestral inheritance.
Naboth refused to sell his vineyard due to God's law. When Ahab asked for the vineyard, Naboth said, "The Lord forbid…" (verse 3).
The vineyard, part of his inherited property, had belonged to his ancestors for many generations, so how could he sell it? But it was not simply a matter of sentiment; it was a command from God as recorded in the Torah.
Leviticus 25:23: "The land shall not be sold for ever: for the land is mine, for ye are strangers and sojourners with me."
Numbers 36:7: "No inheritance in Israel is to pass from one tribe to another, for every Israelite shall keep the tribal inheritance of their ancestors."
God had expressly forbidden the sale of this property; therefore, when Ahab made his request, Naboth said, "The Lord forbid it…How can I do this thing when God has forbidden it?" So, he refused to disobey God.
That made Ahab angry, so, with the help of his wife, Jezebel, he devised a plan. They plotted to have Naboth put to death by having him accused of cursing both God and the king. Ahab then stole the dead man's land!
Ahab was a wealthy ruler who loved himself more than he loved his people. Surveying all that he owned, he was not satisfied with his magnificent estate. He craved a nearby vineyard owned by Naboth and was desperate to buy it. This was not a need; it was outright covetousness!
King Ahab wants to purchase Naboth's vineyard because of its convenient proximity to the palace.
Naboth was stoned to death for obeying God's Word!
Vs. 17-19: Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite: "Go down to meet Ahab, king of Israel, who rules in Samaria. He is now in Naboth's vineyard, where he has gone to take possession of it. Say to him, 'This is what the Lord says: Have you not murdered a man and seized his property?' Then say to him, This is what the Lord says: In the place where dogs licked up Naboth's blood, dogs will lick up your blood—yes, yours!"
Injustice never escapes God's notice. He is a defender of the defenseless. God's judgment isn't always swift, but it is sure.
King Ahab's story is an indictment of Israel because all the characters, except for Jezebel, are Jewish.
King Ahab is not an outsider; he's an Israelite who fails to live by the law.
All of King Ahab's sins in this story reflect the collective sins of the people. And because of these sins, the nation of Israel was to be judged. Eventually, God used the Assyrians and the Babylonians as His instruments of judgment against Israel.
Just as this one vineyard changes hands from a servant to a monarch, the entire land of Israel changed hands from Israel to an outside power.
This was the holy land, given to them by God the Father, and Naboth knew it was against Mosaic Law to sell one's land inheritance.
Ahab must have known it, too, so his insistence reflects the true nature of his heart. Ahab is more interested in satisfying his carnal desires than obeying God's commands.
Elijah prophesied disaster and punishment for Ahab and his family. Ahab's response to the prophecy was to humble himself, and God delayed the punishment until the time of his son.
The moral of this story is that greed, corruption, and abuse of power can have severe consequences.
Ahab's desire for Naboth's vineyard led him to compromise his integrity, ultimately resulting in Naboth's death, and the Assyrians and the Babylonians defeated Israel.
The story highlights the importance of obeying God's law and respecting God's justice and sovereignty over all things.
It also means respecting others' rights and property, as well as being aware of the dangers of allowing ambition and greed to drive our actions.
God is aware of injustice and will ultimately bring judgment upon it. His justice will ultimately prevail, and those who sin will face consequences, even if they appear to escape punishment in the short term.
Ahab escaped the judgment, but his posterity did not, and the entire nation of Israel went into captivity.
Every word we speak, and every action and inaction, is a seed sown.
We need to ask ourselves the question: What type of seeds am I sowing? And let our conscience be our guide in all things.
If you have been sowing bad seeds, I encourage you to repent and begin sowing good seeds, for it will come back to you.
