Matthew House Fort Erie

Matthew House Fort Erie We provide Supported Transitional housing for refugee claimants and homeless persons, women and children in need of housing. http://matthewhouseforterie.ca

We are a faith based NGO serving refugee claimants and refugees in the Niagara Region. Many refugees arrive traumatized. Often they have been victims of violence. All have lost the family and community support they relied on all their lives. We meet them at the border, immediately give them safe housing, food and clothing, and then offer social, emotional and practical support. Specifically, we he

lp them begin their formal refugee claim, get them medical care as needed, connect them to government agencies and schools, provide interpretation and transport to medical and legal appointments, orient them to Canadian culture and facilitate peer mentoring. We facilitate long term integration by mentoring them through the transitions of education and finding employment. We help with family reunification, and offer support in crisis.

We are proud of what many of our residents have accomplished. Many have graduated from high school and then university. They have received awards; started businesses, and contributed to their communities.

In many cases, we have the privilege of becoming extended family. It is our greatest joy.
