We are created in such a way that much of our life runs through familiar patterns. This helps us conserve energy, since we do not need to reinvent the wheel every time we respond to life.

On the other hand, when those patterns become destructive, they begin to shape our lives in unhealthy ways. Breaking those patterns requires change on two levels: in the way we think and in the way we act.

Examining our hearts, wounds, motives, and patterns is necessary, but insight alone is not enough. A decisive part of healing, once we become aware of our destructive patterns, is practicing new ways of responding in everyday life.

And because deeply formed patterns do not change overnight, this process takes time. The formula for change is simple: information + application = transformation. And one more essential ingredient: a lot of patience.

Our problem is not that we have needs or that we enjoy receiving. Our problem is that if we live only to get, we can never experience true happiness. The maturity and fullness of happiness lies in learning to find genuine joy not only in receiving, but also in giving. This wisdom is captured in one of the clearest summaries of Jesus’ teaching on what makes life truly meaningful: “You’re far happier giving than getting.” (Acts 20:35)
