Watershed Conditions Statement - Flood Outlook as issued by the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority

https://alertable.ca/ #/incidents/50e3aabe-139f-48ca-bac1-e3f60638f00f

This notice is intended to advise the public and local municipalities of flooding within the NPCA's jurisdiction as it relates to the Niagara Peninsula, the southeastern portion of the City of Hamilton and the eastern portion of Haldimand County.

The NPCA watershed is currently under a Rainfall Warning as issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada. A low-pressure system is forecast to move across the lower Great Lakes from Sunday December 28th to Monday December 29th, bringing significant rain to the Niagara Peninsula. Expected rainfall amounts at this time are 40 - 70 mm.

At the present time, water levels in the local watercourses are at or slightly above normal for the Niagara watershed due to recent rain and melt events bringing 5 - 10 mm of rainfall/runoff in the past 36 hours. Frozen surfaces and saturated soils will only exacerbate rainfall runoff for the upcoming precipitation event, increasing risks to flooding and erosion.

The NPCA will continue to monitor these conditions and will issue further messages as required. Information on the Flood Status in the watershed can be found on the NPCA's website at:

https://npca.ca/flood-status

https://npca.ca/stream-flow-monitoring

Residents are urged to stay away from creeks, rivers and all waterbodies at this time due to slippery slopes, unstable ice and elevated water levels as they can be hazardous.
We also encourage residents to ensure drainage on their property is not hindered by blocked culverts, catch basins or ditches.
Municipal and Regional staff are also reminded to check local storm sewer infrastructure to ensure its capabilities for this event.
Follow the directions of local authorities and look for any updates on the situation.

This notice is intended to advise the public and local municipalities of the potential for flooding within the NPCA's jurisdiction as it relates to the Niagara Peninsula, the southeastern portion of the City of Hamilton and the eastern portion of Haldimand County.

A low-pressure system is forecast to move across the lower Great Lakes, beginning late Friday April 4th and continuing on Saturday April 5th, bringing significant rain to our area. Expected rainfall amounts at this time are between 25 to 35 mm. Recent rain events over the last 72 hours have already seen 30 - 60 mm of precipitation fall in the area resulting in a large increase of water levels in our local rivers, creeks, and streams.

At the present time, water levels in the local watercourses are high and are approaching critical elevations across the western portions of the watershed. The County of Haldimand and the communities within West Lincoln and Wainfleet, particularly Smithville and Wellandport, are already experiencing high water levels which are expected to increase with the forecasted rain. As such, residents in these areas are advised to remain vigilant over the next 36 hours, continue to check sump pumps and undertake measures to floodproof low openings in their homes.

As water moves through the system, the areas around the City of Welland can expect elevated levels in the Welland River by late Saturday. Residents living near the Welland River within the Town of Pelham and the City of Welland are advised to continue to check sump pumps and undertake measures to floodproof low openings in their homes.

This notice is in effect until 9:00 AM, Monday, April 7th, 2025, and will be updated as required.

Follow the directions of local authorities and look for any updates on the situation.
Stay away from creeks and rivers due to slippery slopes, elevated water levels and high flows.
Municipalities are advised to check for debris blocking storm infrastructure.

This notice is intended to advise the public and local municipalities of the potential for flooding within the NPCA's jurisdiction as it relates to the Niagara Peninsula, the southeastern portion of the City of Hamilton and the eastern portion of Haldimand County.

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a rainfall warning for Southern Ontario. A low-pressure system is forecasted to move into the province on Wednesday morning, bringing rain and freezing rain to much of Southern Ontario. Rainfall amounts of 30 - 50 mm are expected to begin Wednesday morning into Thursday morning with potentially higher amounts in localized areas due to thunderstorms. Another 30 - 50 mm of rain is forecasted to fall over the weekend, which may increase the risk of flooding of local watercourses as they work to drain the runoff from the previous event.

At the present time, water levels in the local watercourses are at or slightly above the seasonal average but remain well below critical flood elevations. This rain will serve to further increase water levels in our local creeks and rivers and will likely result in flooding typically experienced in low-lying, flood prone areas. Major flooding of watercourses is not anticipated at this time.

The Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority has downgraded the Flood Outlook Statement to a Water Safety Statement which will remain in place for the entire watershed due to elevated levels and flows across the Niagara Peninsula.

The recent rain and melting snowpack have caused water levels to rise and resulted in localized flooding of typical flood-prone areas. At the present time, water levels in the local watercourses are elevated but remain below critical flood elevations.

The NPCA will continue to monitor these conditions and will issue further messages as required. Information on the Flood Status in the watershed can be found on the NPCA's website at:

Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority has issued a Flood Outlook Statement for the region.

For Tuesday, March 4th, 2025, this notice is intended to advise the public and local municipalities of the potential for flooding within the NPCA's jurisdiction as it relates to the Niagara Peninsula, the southeastern portion of the City of Hamilton and the eastern portion of Haldimand County.

Environment Canada has released a Special Weather Statement for Niagara Falls, Welland and the Southern Niagara Region. An incoming series of low-pressure systems are forecast to move into Southern Ontario on Tuesday, bringing rain and temperatures well above freezing before moving eastward late Wednesday.

Rainfall amounts of 15 - 25 mm are expected to begin overnight Tuesday into Wednesday afternoon. Temperatures are expected to rise well above freezing and remain that way until Thursday morning. The rain and melting snowpack, which has 40 - 70 mm of additional runoff impact, combined with the frozen soil conditions, could result in localized flooding as well as generate sudden surface water runoff into local ditches, watercourses and storm sewer systems.

At the present time, water levels in the local watercourses are above average but remain well below critical flood elevations. This rain and snow melt will serve to further increase water levels in our local creeks and rivers and will likely result in flooding typically experienced in low-lying, flood prone areas. Major flooding of watercourses is not anticipated at this time.

The NPCA will continue to monitor these conditions and will issue further messages as required. Information on the Flood Status in the watershed can be found on the NPCA's website at:

https://npca.ca/flood-status

https://npca.ca/stream-flow-monitoring

Follow the directions of local authorities and look for any updates on the situation.
Stay away from creek and rivers due to slippery slopes, elevated water levels and high flows.
Municipalities are advised to check for debris blocking storm infrastructure.

This notice is intended to inform the public and local municipalities of the condition of the Lake Erie Shoreline within the NPCA's jurisdiction as it relates to the Niagara Peninsula and the eastern portion of Haldimand County.

Sustained south-westerly wind speeds on Lake Erie are forecasted to reach 60 km/hr, with potential gusts up to 70 km/hr until 4 p.m. today (Wednesday). This evening, they are forecast to drop to 45 km/h SW. Overnight they will shift to west-southwest, building to 45 - 55 km/h and reaching as high as 70 km/h by 7 a.m. Thursday morning. Thursday afternoon sustained west-southwest winds lowering slightly to 60km/h. These winds will serve to increase water levels within Lake Erie's eastern basin.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry has forecasted Lake Erie water levels at Port Colborne to increase by 1.1m (~3.6 feet) above current levels to an elevation of approximately 175.41 MASL. Water levels are forecasted to increase by 1.21m (~4 feet) from Crystal Beach to the Niagara River to an elevation of approximately 175.5 MASL. Significant wave heights, on top of the surge, of 1.6m (5.25 feet) are also forecast to occur during this time. Water levels are expected to peak early Thursday morning. Increased erosion and minor flooding due to storm surge and strong waves are likely.

This notice is in effect until 12:00pm, Thursday, December 5th, 2024 and will be updated as required.

Follow the directions of local authorities and look for any updates on the situation.
Stay clear of the Lake Erie shoreline due to elevated water levels and increased waves.
