I went back to X today to check for more 2026 spray information, and sure enough, I found more spray maps posted there. 🙄 I finally found the missing hectare total for the Wabigoon Forest aerial spray plan and in the plan it says the vegetation targeted includes poplar, birch, cherry, willow, alder, wild raspberry, mountain maple, serviceberry, red maple, fireweed and more. It even lists an objective to “desiccate non-crop woody vegetation.” 😳
The plan itself acknowledges that this so-called “non-crop vegetation” has value. It specifically mentions wildlife habitat, soil protection, nutrient recycling and seedling protection as beneficial aspects that should be considered. Yet aerial herbicide spraying is justified as the “most cost-effective method” 💰💰💰 of vegetation control over a large land base. So yes, they know the vegetation provides habitat, protects soil and supports the forest ecosystem, but the chemical option wins because it is cheaper and easier over large areas. That is Chemical Forestry, and it's horrifying.
It also says signs must remain posted after spraying and must tell people the date of application, the herbicide used and when affected berries can be consumed. Think about that! We need signs to tell PEOPLE when berries are considered safe to eat after a forest has been sprayed. Wildlife doesn’t read signs. Moose don’t read signs. Bears don’t read signs. Birds, insects and pollinators don’t read signs. They are living in, feeding in and moving through these forests the entire time.
Last year the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources posted herbicide notices on Facebook, where people actually saw them, shared them and organized protests. This year those Facebook posts have stopped and the notices are being posted on X instead, yet I still have not been able to find 2026 posts for forests including Ottawa, French-Severn and Bancroft-Minden. I have spent weeks searching the OMNR portal and emailing about missing hectare totals and information, with few replies.
That matters because visibility creates pressure. When people know what is happening, they speak up. I will keep digging and updating the tables, but everyone needs to keep pushing elected officials, foresters, Ministers and municipalities. These are our forests, watersheds, wildlife and communities.
People have been fighting Chemical Forestry for generations, yet Ontario keeps spraying while most Ontarians still do not even know it is happening. They know there is opposition. They post the notices, load the helicopters and spray anyway. Keep spreading the word. Keep fighting.
