Fast sprouting plants like beans and lettuce are key to a late start (ex. Like an evacuation!). You can speed up germination by covering your seeds with a plastic tarp after planting to mimic a greenhouse. 💚

Lots of things happening around town!!! Raspberries and hascaps are growing in the Community Garden 🪴🌱, the Food Forest 🌳🌲 on Dadson Row has been mulched (and the strawberries are growing like CRAZY), and flowers from last year are still sprouting in the planters on Main St (along with some new additions 🌸🪻💐🌾). Be sure to be engaging with the community and keeping an eye on what happens next! 🩷

The Flin Flon Community Garden is doing a leaf drive and would like your bagged leaves. We are using them as natural mulch material.

Drop off your bagged leaves at the Food Forest on Dadson Row, October 19th from 11:30am - 2pm.

Adopt an Apple Tree program… how does it work?

1.Register for Adoption.
2. Receive training on how to care for your adopted apple tree.
3. Meet your Apple Tree that’s already planted in the Dadson Row Food Forest.
4. Schedule regular check-ups and examine it for signs of insect infestations, discoloured or yellowing leaves, or substantial leaf dropping
5. Lastly be sure to take a picture with your plaque so everyone can see your beautiful hard work!

The Flin Flon Community Garden had the pleasure of hosting the Honourable Anita R. Neville, Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba, during her visit for Culture Days. Part of her itinerary included a tour of Flin Flon’s first ever Food Forest on Dadson Row and concluded with a delicious culinary experience at the Staff House. Lyn Brown of The Pickled Loon cooked the following menu crafted from foraged ingredients from the Boreal Forest that surrounds us:

To start off our culinary experience of the Boreal Forest we were served blueberry borscht made with local wild blueberries and sweetened with spruce cone syrup. This soup was served with some delicious mini muffins made with goldenrod flowers and birch bark flour and paired beautifully with a crisp bubbly fireweed flower iced tea.

For our main dish we had crispy northern pike sautéed in lambsquarter butter with boreal fir needle seasoning salt on a daub of chimichurri. Our sides were a bow tie pasta with rose hip pasta sauce that’s been flavoured with lingonberry infused vodka. The pasta was topped with some toasted pine nuts that matched perfectly with a wilted lettuce salad and dandelion stems.

For dessert, Chef Lyn served us a delectable carrot cake infused with roasted dandelion root coffee. This dense cake was matched with a rose hip and habanero buttercream icing that was sweet yet warm. To top it off, when you couldn’t imagine the forest ever tasting so good, Lyn added spruce cone candied pecans for an amazing crunch leaving you wanting for more.
