🎨 Congratulations to Alyssa Byrne — 2nd Place Nationally! 🇨🇦
Southern Shore Legion – Branch 34 is incredibly proud to congratulate Alyssa Byrne, a recent graduate of St. Kevin’s High School in Goulds, who has earned second place nationally in the 2026 Legion National Foundation National Youth Remembrance Contest for her outstanding Remembrance Day poster.
St. Kevin’s High School participates in the Legion’s Youth Remembrance Contest in partnership with Southern Shore Legion – Branch 34, and we are delighted to see one of our local students receive recognition at the national level.
Alyssa’s award-winning poster was inspired by her visit to Beaumont-Hamel after previously earning second place provincially and being selected for a trip to France and Belgium to follow the Trail of the Caribou.
Her experience at Beaumont-Hamel left a lasting impression. For her Grade 12 poster, Alyssa captured the contrast between the peaceful beauty of the site today and its tragic history. She depicted the colourful landscape alongside soldiers in a trench drawn in black and white — representing, in her words, “a moment caught in time.”
This remarkable piece will now be displayed in Canada’s Parliament Buildings in Ottawa during a two-week Remembrance observance from October 23 through November 11, helping honour the members of the Canadian Armed Forces who have served and sacrificed.
From a school art project here at home to recognition on the national stage, Alyssa’s achievement is a wonderful example of how a new generation can help keep the importance of Remembrance alive through art.
Congratulations, Alyssa, from everyone at Southern Shore Legion – Branch 34! We are proud to have partnered with St. Kevin’s High School in providing students the opportunity to participate in this important Legion program, and even prouder to see a young person from our area receive such an outstanding national honour.
Lest We Forget.
(For those wishing to enter the Poster Literary Contest for 2027, schools have kits by this week and submissions are due in November. There are categories for elementary, junior and high school students and we love to see strong participation from schools in our area)
