How many dogs are there in Fernie? The exact number is not known, but based on Fernie's approximate population of 6,500 residents, an estimated 2,700 households, and Canadian pet ownership statistics (where about 40% of households own at least one dog, with an average of 1.3 dogs per dog-owning household), we estimate that there are roughly 1,400 dogs in the community.

The City of Kelowna has a new $1.2M dog park. Fernie's dog park cost ¼ of that, with no direct funding from the city taxpayers. We rely on grants and your donations to fund our park.

On October 7, the BC SPCA brought 27 dogs and one cat into care from a rural property in the Kootenays, following an animal protection investigation involving concerns of irresponsible breeding and neglect.
