ONE WEEK until the Project 9 Race!

Race up, down, or all mountain, then stick around for an après BBQ, Project 9 beer (of course!) and awards at the Elk Valley Nordic Centre.

As a small team, we really appreciate riders pre-registering online. It helps us plan and prepare so we can make it a fun night for everyone!

We can’t wait to see who will be crowned the fastest Up, Down and All-Mountain Champs of 2026!

2026 Fernie High Roller Poker Rider or Run - October 3rd

The Fernie High Roller is a poker-run epic day on the trails, taking you around some of the best peaks in town. Make it as challenging as you like with 3 route options: The High Roller, The Low Roller and Mini Roller (kids ride).

Participants will receive a punch card with the trails listed in each route on it. The more trails you check off, the more playing cards you will earn for your poker hand. When riders return to Annex Park you will trade in your punch card for playing cards and have a chance at playing the best poker hand to win prizes! This event can be done running or biking.

Registration is open now!

With some planned absences we had a reduced crew tackling multiple smaller tasks thanks to being more agile. We took advantage of that flexibility with our 2 person crew and still covered a lot of ground.

In anticipation of the P9 race, the crew completed some brushing in the upper section and resolved a recurring drainage issue by adding a small bridge. They also repaired the damage from the water running down the trail and improved some berms. The trail is set for the P9 race - which will be on the 9th day of the 9th month, as always.

Some of the smaller quick work tasks this week included a bridge repair on the Mt Fernie hiking trail, improving the eroded road section at the bottom of Phat Bastard to help define the riding line and improve drainage - this section will need some more attention in the future.
Work also continued on Eric's trip with a new small bridge replacing a drainage solution that wasn't working in wet weather and some nice dirt work along the way. There's more to do in refreshing Eric's trip and the weather looks like it will cooperate in the near future, giving us some better dirt to work with.

The Dem Bones rebuild project continues, and it was the focus of the Thursday work party again - the rehab of this classic trail is nearing completion! After building the reroute section last week, the old section was fully decommissioned as required by BC Parks when a reroute is completed. The new section got some more love with further tread work and improved corners, bumps and rolls to make it more fun and a better ride overall. The trail now provides a more chill loop from the provincial park for less aggressive or less experienced riders. The route will get even better after more reroutes to Stove are completed to avoid some of the steeper and more eroded sections. We hope to tackle those this season.

Have a great weekend, and don’t forget to share your Downward Dogs laps with us to enter to win a FTA merch prize pack. The last day to enter is Aug 30th!

Two weeks until Fernie’s annual Project 9 Race, on Sept. 9th!

Come out and test yourself on the classic Fernie black diamond trail. We’ll be honest, the P9 climb is a real grunt of an up, but you’ll be rewarded with some top-tier singletrack on the way down.

We’ll be timing the up, down, and overall times, so whether you’re a speedy XC climber, a DH’er, or an all-rounder, there’s a category for you! The event will be followed by a social BBQ, beverages, and casual awards at the Elk Valley Nordic Centre.

Please register online. Race starts at 6pm. Plate pick up 5:00pm - 5:30pm at the Elk Valley Nordic Center.

That bit of rain last week helped us out and gave the trails a much needed mid summer reset. Thanks to the rain, the Trail Crew opened most of Downward Dog last weekend! The new green flow trail is getting rave reviews. It started out soft after the fresh dirt work, but it is getting firmer and better as more riders check it out. There is more to come on this trail, so stay tuned for a full opening. Check out our last post for a downward dog contest happening until August 30th!

We carried on with our refresh of Eric's Trip - a series of rough corners nearer the top were freshened up and drainage improvements were made. The dirt was really dry, but the crew hauled water to help the corners set up. When it rains next we will be back to this section to get the corners packed again as is needed on a trail that gets this much traffic. The trail is shaping up, but there is more work to come before the end of the season.

The final piece of the puzzle in the Dem Bones renovation was a 250 metre reroute near the bottom to eliminate a very eroded and unsustainable section. Trail Crew cleared the route and worked with volunteers to dig the tread. It officially opened at the end of Thursday's work party. Watch for more volunteer opportunities on this section as we refine it and make it more playful.

We highly recommend getting out for a ride this weekend on Dem Bones - especially if you haven't ridden it for a while. There have been a lot of changes this season and this Fernie classic is back to being a smoother blue trail. The new section is still a bit fresh, and needs some more work before we are done, but it rides well already and more tires on it will only make it better! If green is more your speed go up to Downward Dog and give it a spin, and don’t forget to get a pic with your own downward dog too!
