🌿 Celebrating 10 Years of Protecting Bayfield River Flats 🌿

This year marks a decade since the Bayfield and area community came together to preserve the beautiful Bayfield River Flats Natural Area for future generations.

Back in 2016, the Bayfield River Valley Trail Association (BRVTA) and local volunteers launched a grassroots fundraising campaign to protect nearly 1,000 feet of riverbank in Bayfield. Thanks to incredible community support, more than $70,000 was raised to purchase the property, which was then donated to the Huron Tract Land Trust Conservancy (HTLTC) for permanent preservation.

Today, the nearly five-acre natural area is home to incredible wildlife including osprey, eagles, beavers, and species at risk. Maintained by BRVTA volunteers, the property has been transformed into a treasured community space welcoming more than 11,000 visits each year.

Over the past 10 years, volunteers and donors have continued to enhance the area through cleanup efforts, trail building, erosion control projects, a canoe and kayak launch, and the addition of a safe pedestrian walkway beneath the Highway 21 bridge.

This milestone is a testament to what a passionate community can accomplish together. Thank you to the many volunteers, donors, and organizations who helped make Bayfield River Flats the community gem it is today. 💚

Community comes together to enhance Bayfield River Flats Natural Area 🌱

Approximately 25 people from the Bayfield and area community came out on Sunday, May 3, 2026, to plant native trees, shrubs, and plants at the Bayfield River Flats Natural Area. The planting event, organized by the Bayfield River Valley Trails Association (BRVTA), builds on recent shoreline protection work using innovative erosion control measures along the Bayfield River Flats.

With beautiful weather and enthusiastic volunteers of all ages, the event was a wonderful success. Together, participants helped restore natural habitat, improve biodiversity, and strengthen the riverbank for years to come.

“I think everybody really enjoyed it,” said volunteer Roger Lewington. “Thanks to everyone who helped to make this happen. The Bayfield River Flats looks amazing.”

A special Thank you to the Ontario Community Environmental Fund for supporting this event and to everyone who rolled up their sleeves and made a positive difference in our community! 🌳

Did you know?

The Huron Tract Land Trust Conservancy has planted over 30, 000 trees across its properties - and they're thriving!

Pictured here is the hard working tree planting crew from Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority helping us reforest the Woodburne Farm back in the spring of 2018. Fast forward to today - some of those trees are now over 20 feet tall!

Thank you to our amazing donors, and partners, including County of Huron through the Huron Clean Water Project and Forests Canada for supporting this work!

Together we are working to protect, and restore land, water and nature in the historic Huron Tract.
