Steelworkers from across Toronto including the Steelworkers' Toronto Area Council - STAC and USW Local 1998 showed their solidarity marching in the Labour Day parade.

On their way to the marshalling area, the USW marchers stopped by the Chestnut Residence at the University of Toronto to show support to the Local 1998 bargaining team during negotiations for a new contract with the university.

Thousands of administrative and technical staff at the University of Toronto have voted by a 96% margin in favour of a strike mandate to back demands for a fair contract.

The 6,100 members of USW Local 1998 will be in a legal strike position on Tuesday, Sept. 8, the first day of classes.

The union has been attempting to negotiate a fair contact for months, to address serious issues including job security and artificial intelligence protections, remote work, wage increases that keep pace with the rising cost of living, and health care benefits.

“Job security is our members’ number one non-monetary priority. We’ll keep fighting to win the protection they deserve,” says USW Local 1998 President John Ankenman.

More than 6,100 administrative and technical staff at the University of Toronto have voted overwhelmingly in favour of a strike mandate.

Way to go USW Southwestern Area Council!

On Saturday, Aug. 15, 2026, the USW Southwestern Ontario Area Council held its first annual golf tournament.

It was a great day for all. They were able to raise $5,000 for the
Local Community Food Centre in Stratford. We look forward to many more years of raising funds for those in need.

Here's a shoutout to USW Local 5795 in Labrador City, N.L.

Earlier this year, when the local employer pulled cancelled its usual support for the annual community event, the local stepped up to announce it would ensure the show went on.

Family Day has long been a highlight for workers, retirees and families across Labrador City, offering a chance to reconnect outside the workplace and celebrate the strong sense of community that defines the region.

For Local 5795, supporting the event reflects the values that have always guided the Steelworkers – solidarity, compassion and giving back.

Earlier this week, Steelworkers and retirees from the USW South Central Ontario Area Council proudly hosted our annual Operation Backpack event. With the dedication of our volunteers, we donated 400 backpacks filled with school supplies.

These backpacks will be distributed through Send’Em Off Smiling and the Upper Grand District School Board, helping ensure that students in our communities are ready for a strong start to the school year.

Thanks to all the volunteers, USW local members and their family members, area employers, SOAR members (retirees) and the USW Family and Community Education Fund.
