On Saturday, August 22nd, Branch 39 had the honour to host a Memorial Service for the late Private David Byers and Corporal Glen Arnold, both of who were killed in action on September 18, 2006 in Afghanistan. Our community once again showed support to the families of these fallen soldiers as we joined together to share stories and memories. A very special thank you to Chantal, Christoper and Layla who worked so hard organizing this and their many hours of travel to get here in person.

CHALLENGE #7 IS LIVE: GIVE 100 HIGH FIVES!

As part of our Centennial đź’Ż Challenge celebrating 100 years of the Royal Canadian Legion, both nationally and locally here in Espanola, we're challenging our community to spread a little encouragement, one high five at a time!

We want you to give 100 high fives. 🙌

How you make it happen is entirely up to you. You can give them all in one day, spread them out over a week, recruit your family and friends to help, or turn it into a challenge at work, school, or in your community. Maybe you give a high five to someone who accomplished something they're proud of or maybe you celebrate a teammate, coworker, neighbour, friend, or family member. You could always give one to someone simply because they made your day a little better, or a stranger just to be that random spark of joy.

📸 Share your progress or your favourite high-five moments on social media and tag the Espanola Legion so we can see how our community is taking on the challenge. We would also love it if you'd tag a friend and challenge them to join you. There are plenty of ways to make 💯 count, but we'll also add that the point isn't really the number. The magic is what happens when we use it as an excuse to celebrate the people around us, spark joy and come together.

So, who will you give your first high five to? 🙌

Mapping the Next 100: Help us build the blueprint.

Communities don’t run on good intentions alone. They are built by people who give their time, skills, ideas, and energy to make things happen. As we look toward the next 100 years, we want to understand what would make it easier and more meaningful for more people to get involved.

This week’s question: What is one thing that would encourage you to volunteer in your community?

Maybe it’s a flexible schedule, shorter commitments, volunteering with friends or family, the chance to learn a new skill, helping with something you genuinely care about, or simply knowing exactly where your time is needed.

There’s no wrong answer. We want to know what would make volunteering feel doable, worthwhile, and maybe even a little fun.

And if you already volunteer, tell us what keeps you coming back. Your experience might help someone else find their way in.

What would make you say, “Sure, I can help with that”?

Help us map the next 100.
