On June 6, 1944, more than 14,000 Canadians landed on the beaches of Normandy. The Allied D-Day invasion was one of the most pivotal moments of the Second World War.

Facing heavy enemy fire and impossible conditions, Canadian soldiers fought with extraordinary courage to help liberate Europe from German occupation. More than 350 Canadians lost their lives that day, and hundreds more were wounded.

Today, we remember the bravery and sacrifice of all those who served on D-Day and throughout the Battle of Normandy. Their courage changed the course of history.

Homelessness is something that none of us, especially in the small communities like ours, wants to think about or even acknowledge. However, it is a very real problem - our veterans are no exception. This campaign is running across our Province and we want to help these vulnerable people, whether its in our community or elsewhere. No one should have to be without some of these little comforts that most of us take for granted. We have a donation barrel in our downstairs lounge for anyone who would like to donate new or gently used, clean hats and socks towards this campaign to help our homeless veterans.

On behalf of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 39 Espanola, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Town of Espanola for installing the crosswalk at the corner of Oscar and Annette Street. This crosswalk, and many more just like it, have been installed in Towns and Cities across Canada in remembrance and recognition of the sacrifices made by our Veterans in Conflicts and Peacekeeping missions around the World and members of the RCMP who help to make our country safe for us to live in. To our Mayor Doug Gervais and our CEO Joseph Burke thank you for making this happen.

MEAT ROLL-OFF IS COMING TO AN END FOR THE SUMMER - the last regular weekly meat roll-off for Branch 39 will be held Saturday, May 30th. Come and join us for a great social afternoon - roll-off starts at 2:30 pm sharp --- and maybe you can go home with supper.
