UINR UINR is Cape Breton’s Mi’kmaq voice on natural resources and the environment.

We work in forestry, marine science research, species management, traditional Mi’kmaq knowledge, water quality monitoring, and environmental partnerships. The Unama’ki Institute of Natural Resources (UINR) is Cape Breton’s Mi'kmaq voice on natural resources and the environment. UINR represents the five Mi’kmaq communities of Unama’ki and addresses concerns regarding natural resources and their sustainability.

At UINR, we are so fortunate to spend time with our Elders and Knowledge Holders. We are always grateful for the time and depth of knowledge they share with us. Each moment with them is a treasured gift.

It is with this in our hearts that we say farewell to a long-standing advisor to UINR, Judy Bernard/Googoo.

Sutik and Joe, friends of Charlie, were involved in early days at UINR. They were in UINR’s advisory groups, training initiatives, community celebrations, and land-based programming.

Sutik was one of the most down-to-earth people we know. She knew so much about our lands, waters and relations, and was so generous to share with anyone interested. She guided our Nikani Awtiken youth program, led medicine walks and rabbit snaring workshops, and always had one of the best moose calls at our Feast in the Highlands (“Here Moosey Moosey Moosey!!! 🫎).

One of the many things that made Sutik so special is that even though she had SO much knowledge, she was always learning. She’d come to Elders meetings with a little notebook to take down Mi’kmaq words she wasn’t familiar with, she loved asking questions, and was always enrolled in workshops and courses. She was working toward her B.Ed! She was committed to lifelong learning.

Our deep condolences to Joe and their families. We will miss Sutik’s gentle nature, her guiding voice, and her sweet smiling face.

Very proud to have Levi on the UINR team - and to be a part of Apoqnmatulti’k!

Meet Levi Denny!

Levi is a master’s student at Dalhousie University researching Kaspelaw (Gaspereau) in Pitu’pa’q (Bras d’Or Lake). Growing up in Eskasoni First Nation, Levi developed an interest in the behaviour of aquatic species, particularly Kaspelaw.

His research—co-designed with Mi’kmaw harvesters—focuses on where Kaspelaw travel and whether they remain in the lake year-round. By weaving together Mi’kmaw, local, and western scientific knowledge systems, Levi is exploring how acoustic telemetry can help to inform a Mi'kmaq-led Kaspelaw commercial fishery.

Etuaptmumk is at the heart of everything we do at UINR - thanks for sharing Apoqnmatulti’k!

In November, several of our team members participated in a workshop on navigating Etuaptmumk (Two-Eyed Seeing) in aquatic research, hosted by The Confederacy of Mainland Mi'kmaq, UINR , Environment and Natural Resources in Canada, and Fisheries and Oceans Canada at Dalhousie University's Agricultural Campus in Truro. We were honoured to share a panel presentation about the Apoqnmatulti’k partnership, reflecting on our experiences, lessons learned, and the evolution of this collaborative research model.

It was a privilege to be in a room filled with so many practitioners of Etuaptmumk, including Elder Albert Marshall, who first articulated the guiding principle of Etuaptmumk. Elder Albert, who named the Apoqnmatulti'k partnership eight years ago, offered thoughtful insights, challenging questions, and invaluable feedback for our team. Wela’lin, Albert, for continually keeping us grounded, accountable, and striving to do better.

A heartfelt thank you as well to the organizers of this workshop for bringing together such a meaningful and inspiring gathering. The conversations, connections, and shared learning will guide us as we continue this important work.
