The Lending Journey

The Lending Journey We offer loans to women in need in impoverished countries to start up, expand, or continue a business. In our case, the recipients are usually women.

The Lending Journey was created to help people in the global south improve their social and economic conditions. Most of the women we find ourselves dealing with are poor and often have very little education. They are very enterprising and, given the opportunity, are prepared to work hard to create small businesses. Currently, our primary focus is with small town in Ecuador and Nicaragua. Micro-en

terprise is often considered one of the most effective and flexible strategies in the fight against global poverty. It is sustainable and can be implemented on the massive scale necessary to respond to the urgent needs of those living on less than $1 a day — the world’s poorest. The Lending Journey was created in the belief that even the least privileged, when given an opportunity, will rise above their present socioeconomic situation. Most recipients of our loans are underprivileged mothers with minimal skills, who often appear unemployable and ineligible for a traditional bank loan. Each applicant is interviewed and given guidance in how to prepare a simple business plan and application. Once the individual receives a loan, our regional director works with them over a 26-week period to help ensure their individual success. At present, we are seeing a repayment rate of 95% on the loans, a sign of people’s commitment to improve their situation. Through The Lending Journey, our national staff are witnessing entire families being transformed, jobs being created, and people gaining self-worth. Micro-enterprises consist of making small loans, usually of $300 CAD, to individuals to establish or expand a small, self-sustaining business. The loan allows a person to purchase the equipment or stock necessary in the beginning. Store owners need products and space; shoemakers need leather and tools; pharmacists need drugs and remedies; restaurants need appliances and ingredients; and clothes makers need material and sewing machines. However, as they operate their business, they actually make back the money they receive. Hence, an important and exciting part of the micro-enterprise is the recycling of funds. As loans are repaid, usually in six months to a year, they are re-loaned. This continual investment multiplies the impact of each dollar lent. The Lending Journey has sponsored over 2,500 businesses in Ecuador and Nicaragua.

I am so grateful and blessed to have been a part of this mission trip to Guatemala.(March 2026) These photos are a reminder of two things; 1) we are not your normal run of the mill micro-finance charity and 2) We will always be more about the people (our borrowers)than the process. Thank you to our staff Elliet (Nicaragua) Josselyn (Guatemala) Lesvia (Guatemala-she also opened her home to feed us in this photo) Ashley (Canada-who was our official social media person) Carlos (United States-from our US board) Wayne (United States-also our US bard) and Judy (Waynes’ better half). And as always I am grateful to our Lord for allowing me to be part of this incredible ministry…The Lending Journey

When I first volunteered for this mission trip to Guatemala with The Lending Journey, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. I knew it would involve adventure, stepping outside my comfort zone, being obedient to God, serving others, and experiencing a new culture—but beyond that, a lot was unknown. What I did know was that I wanted to say yes.

My initial understanding of microfinance was fairly basic. I saw it primarily as small loans with low interest and structured repayment. But over the past few days, I’ve come to understand that The Lending Journey offers far more than financial support—it provides stability, dignity, and community.

I had the privilege of meeting two women (Jeanneth and Glenda) in their 20s who had each recently lost their husbands and are now raising young children on their own. Through a special support fund, TLJ is walking alongside them during this incredibly difficult season.

Both women have started small, home-based businesses that allow them to provide for their families while caring for their children. Even more powerful is the way their community has come together to support and pray for them—reminding me that this work is about more than economics; it’s about people and relationships.

Day 2 of The Lending Journey’s mission trip took us to Antigua and San Andrés Itzapa, where we visited a school founded by the Canadian charity Loving Arms.

We were welcomed in the most unforgettable way—worship songs, traditional dances, big smiles, and even bigger hugs. The students were full of energy and pride as they showed us their classrooms and shared their daily life with us.

The school itself is incredible, with an outdoor space, farm animals, and even a therapy horse that supports the children in unique and meaningful ways.

What stayed with me the most was the heart of this community. Their love for Jesus, for one another, and for us—complete strangers—was deeply moving. There was a genuine joy and openness in every interaction.

Spending time with these children was a powerful reminder of what truly matters: showing up with honesty, being present, and loving others wholeheartedly. I am so grateful to have experienced that kind of connection and love today!

Hi, you don’t know me, but my name is Ashley, and I’m currently on my first mission trip to Guatemala with The Lending Journey.
The stories of women—and the belief that you can do anything despite external circumstances—have always been close to my heart. So I want to take you along with me on this journey as we meet the inspiring women who make up The Lending Journey.
Today (Day 1), we met with borrowers, many of whom are single moms working tirelessly to provide for their children. Some have also faced recent tragedies, including the loss of their husbands. Despite this, they continue to show incredible strength.
Watching these women come together to support, uplift, and love one another was a beautiful reminder of the power of community—something you don’t always see so clearly. We ate together, sang together, cried together, and laughed together.
Rosario, Lesvia, Josselyn, Glenda, Maria, Gabriela, Jeanneth —these are the women who are setting inspiring examples for their communities and their children. They welcome you in, make you feel like family, and show us all that with love and support, anything is possible.

Today on International Women’s Day we celebrate the strength, courage, and resilience of women everywhere. 💜

Across Latin America, women are rewriting their stories — building businesses, supporting their families, and creating brighter futures for their children. With determination, community, and opportunity, they are creating lasting change in their communities, with organizations like The Lending Journey walking alongside them through mentorship, training, and access to small business loans.

One powerful example is The Resilience Tour — a critically acclaimed documentary following three Indigenous women from different regions of the Americas as they cycle across Ecuador, sharing stories of perseverance, culture, and hope. The film has been recognized at international film festivals and has received multiple awards.

These are more than stories — they are real lives being transformed.

2025 was a year filled with great highs and great lows for The Lending Journey. Dealing with governments and banks who don’t always have the best of intentions can be disheartening but seeing a plan come together can make up for all of the challenges.

One of our biggest accomplishments this year has been the opening of The Lending Journey in Guatemala. We were blessed in finding some amazing leaders and a wonderful legal team which has lead to us being in a position to hand out our first loans in Guatemala this year. This week our team celebrated with a Christmas brunch for some of our loan recipients. What a wonderful way to end the year!!

We are truly blessed to have these women on our team. Thank you Josselyn, Lesvia, Eliett and Tamia for all that you do, day in and day out, to make this happen.
