Kingfisher Interpretive Centre Society ​The Kingfisher Interpretive Centre Society (KICS) is a not-for profit, volunteer driven community based salmon hatchery and environmental education centre.

🐟 Spawning season brings an important step in the salmon life cycle: egg collection. Eggs are carefully collected from female salmon and fertilized with milt from males, then placed in a protected hatchery environment to develop.

At Kingfisher Interpretive Centre, it’s an opportunity to learn about the care that goes into supporting the next generation of salmon, and the incredible journey that starts with a tiny egg. 💙

Thank you to everyone who came by our Salmon Open House! 🐟 The salmon dissection on the beach gave us a fascinating look at these incredible fish and plenty to talk about.

Come find out with us! 🐟

—SALMON OPEN HOUSE—
Join us at the Kingfisher Interpretive Centre for a relaxed on October 10, from 10 am to 12 pm. We’ll explore these incredible fish and some of the superpowers that help them on their journey.

The Chinook salmon are here but they’re not quite ready to spawn yet! 🐟

For now, they’re gathering in deep pools where the water is cooler, safer and rich in oxygen. As spawning approaches, they’ll move into shallower areas closer to the gravel beds, where the females will begin digging their nests called redds.

Soon, we’re hopeful the Shuswap River bed will come alive with the next stage of their incredible journey.

What You’ll Do:
Present to local school groups
Work outdoors in a beautiful natural setting
Teach students about local Traditional Life-ways, salmon and the Shuswap River
Lead hands-on activities and educational experiences
Help create a fun, welcoming and meaningful experience for visiting students.

We’re Looking For Someone Who:
Enjoys working with children and youth
Is comfortable speaking to groups
Has an interest in salmon, nature and local knowledge
Enjoys working outdoors
Is enthusiastic, dependable and willing to learn
