Heat warning and available cooling centres

Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for Elliot Lake. Hot and humid conditions begin Saturday and will continue into Sunday evening.

The City of Elliot Lake and the Elliot Lake Moose Lodge will be opening cooling centres on the following days:

The Elliot Lake Public Library at 45 Hillside Drive South is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m Monday to Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Closed on Sundays. There is no food or drink allowed in the library, however there is a water fountain available.

The Moose Lodge at 26 Oakland Blvd, is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday August 10, 2025. Water and drinks are available to purchase.
There are public transit stops at both locations.

Other places to cool down in Elliot Lake include:
· The Splash Pad at Kiwanis Park (Open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day)
· Spruce Beach (lifeguard supervision 12 p.m. to 7 p.m.)
· Spine Beach (lifeguards not on duty this weekend, use at your own risk)

At last night's Council Meeting Mayor Wannan made the following Proclamation which proclaimed February 2025 as Black History Month in the City of Elliot Lake.
The full proclamation is below:

~ PROCLAMATION ~

WHEREAS, Black History Month is an opportunity to acknowledge and honour the historical and present contributions of Black Canadians, and recognizes their significant contributions made to Canada; and

WHEREAS, during Black History Month, we celebrate the many achievements and contributions made by Black Canadians to our collective economic, cultural, spiritual and political development; and

WHEREAS, the City of Elliot Lake recognizes and values the significant contributions and advances that Black Canadians have made, and continue to make to Canadian society;

WHEREAS, the City of Elliot Lake recognizes the theme for Black History Month 2025 is Black Legacy and Leadership: Celebrating Canadian History and Uplifting Future Generations;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mayor Andrew Wannan, do hereby proclaim February 2025 as Black History Month in the City of Elliot Lake and encourage all residents to celebrate our diverse heritage and culture and continue our efforts to make Elliot Lake a welcoming community for all.
