Everyone is important to us. Therefore, NorthEast Edmonton Safe Neighbourhoods Association is hosting a Youth Self Defense class. This is not a martial arts class, it’s a self-defense system that will be taught over 2 classes, in which you must attend both. The goal is to avoid, evade and escape from danger first. Additional tools for when you cannot escape, perhaps due to physical limitations or if trapped.

This class is split into two different age groups, and is open to all residents, regardless of gender, and physical abilities (whether permanent, rental or new to the area) in NorthEast Edmonton. This includes all areas east of 82 Street and north of Yellowhead Trail, as well as all areas east of Fort Road. It extends from the North Saskatchewan River in the south all the way north to Edmonton’s northern city limit, with the river forming the entire eastern boundary. An adult one will be held later in the year.

If there is a concern with the registration fee, please email [email protected] with your registration and we will assist you. Registration closes June 30, 2026.

Have you found an orphaned animal? If you find a fawn, gosling or other young animal that appears to be without its mother, leave it alone.

Wildlife mothers will often leave their young for periods of time to search for food. These young animals are not in danger.

Wildlife mothers are very protective and will aggressively defend their young. Larger animals, such as deer or moose, can cause serious injury to people who approach their offspring.

If you are concerned about a possibly orphaned animal, monitor it from a distance for at least 24 hours. If, after this time, you still do not see the mother return, call the nearest Fish and Wildlife office for advice on how to proceed in a way that's safest for you and for the animal.

For more information about orphaned or injured wildlife, visit: alberta.ca/orphaned-or-injured-wildlife.aspx
