Happy Thanksgiving!

Our next meeting is this October 13th and as with all organizations and individuals in this modern age, Riverview is looking at enhancing its social media footprint and impact. To this end we are extraordinarily please and excited to be hosting Maelle Toewes as our guest speaker tomorrow.

Maelle Toews is a passionate content and product marketer based in Edmonton, proudly serving as the Public Image Chair for Rotary District 5370. With a deep belief that storytelling is the heartbeat of community impact, Maelle helps organizations amplify their message and build meaningful connections. As a past president of the Rotary Club of Edmonton Urban Spirits, she brings firsthand club-level experience to her district role, equipping local leaders to harness the power of their online presence, amplify their service, and inspire their communities. Like all Rotarians, she understands that Rotary clubs are already doing incredible work every single day—the real challenge is making sure the community sees it. Using clear strategy and strong branding, she helps clubs showcase their impact so they can attract new members, partners, and supporters.

Next on our speakers series. September 22, Tamisan Bencz-Knight will speak about Edmonton's Food Bank. Learn a little more about Edmonton's Food Bank and its current work feeding vulnerable people in our community. You'll hear about their programs, impact, statistics, and their work "beyond food" while sharing the stories behind the numbers.
The Rotary Club of Edmonton Riverview has been a long time supporter of the Food Bank and members regularly volunteer to help sort food at their warehouse.

Rotary Fellowships are a novel way for Rotarians to unite through a shared hobby, recreational activity, profession or cultural interest. There are currently 118 Rotary Fellowships (there are always new ones started). Our guests on September 15, Sherry Wells and David Yaki, are members of the Esperanto Fellowship and are promoting Esperanto as a serious world language. Other examples are camping, photography, tea lovers, golf, travel hosting and many, many more. Check the link provided and explore. Rotary, part of the eradication of polio since 1985!

With the launch of PolioPlus in 1985, Rotary made a promise that one day no child will ever have to worry about being paralyzed by polio. Keeping promises, especially one so ambitious, isn't easy, but we've come too far to break it now. This World Polio Day, we are remembering our promise to the children of the world and recommitting to ending polio for good.

Leadership, Service and the Courage to Let the Picture Emerge

“You don’t have to know the ending to be perfectly on path.”

An interesting quote to be sure. I think this has a meaningful lesson for Rotary and for leadership more broadly.

We often begin a service project with a clear vision. We develop the plan, assign responsibilities and hope everything comes together as intended.
But service rarely works that way.

People change. Circumstances change. New needs emerge. Some ideas gain momentum while others fade. Unexpected partnerships develop. Sometimes the final result looks very different from what we originally imagined.

That isn’t necessarily failure. It may be (organic? practical?) leadership.

Not every idea needs to become a project. Not every project needs to continue forever. And sometimes the person, idea or partnership we didn’t expect becomes the missing piece.

The challenge is to remain committed to our purpose without becoming overly attached to our plan.

For Rotary, our purpose is beautifully simple: Service Above Self.

Our plans should be a compass, not a cage.

Good leaders create direction while remaining open to what emerges. We need the courage to adjust, the humility to listen and the patience to allow the next chapter to develop.

Perhaps the question isn’t: “How do I make every piece fit?”
But rather: “What is emerging—and how can I help it become something meaningful?”

We don’t have to know exactly how the story ends.
We simply need to keep serving, keep learning, keep listening and keep moving forward.

Sometimes the picture that emerges is better than the one we originally imagined.

Next Tuesday, September 1st, we'll be hosting Dr. Trish Reay, from the UofA. The topic of her discussion is: "Engaging with others on polarizing topics: The case of safe injection sites in Alberta".

Professor Trish Reay will discuss findings from recent research about the development of first opposing, and then entrenched public opinions regarding safe injection sites in Alberta. This is one recent issue that has generated support from some community members, while generating fierce opposition from others.
Prof. Reay will conclude with attention to other examples of contentious topics, and how such escalation of disagreement can be avoided.

The Cinnamon Bun Fun Run was a great success. We sold out with 300 registrations! Great weather, good times, lots of smiles and of course, Freson Bros sourdough cinnamon buns. Thanks to everyone who made this Rotary Club of Edmonton Riverview event a success.
