"Fire fighting must be our budget priority."

We are standing with Councillor Erin Rutherford’s call to action today. Edmonton’s rapid growth means our crews are being pushed to the limit, and our infrastructure is lagging behind.

Protecting Edmontonians isn't a luxury—it’s Council's core responsibility. It's time to align the budget with public safety.

NEW OPINION PIECE PUBLISHED.

As Edmonton grows, so does the demand on emergency response, and our budget needs to reflect that reality.

Edmonton’s firefighters do so much for us. They are on the front line during some of our worst crises, and we cannot continue to put additional pressure on them. They keep us safe, and they deserve the resources to do their jobs safely and effectively.

By investing in fire services, we’re investing in what matters most to us: the well-being of our families, friends, and community members. There is nothing more important, and that’s why funding for fire services is essential right now.

We’re so proud of our members. They are the experts on the front lines, and it’s vital that decision-makers hear directly from those who do the work every shift, day and night.

We appreciate Edmonton-Manning MP for stopping by Clareview Fire Station 18 to hear from some of our Fire Fighters and get their firsthand perspectives.

Thank you for also taking the time to continue our conversation we started in Ottawa last month on the issues facing those on the frontline and their families.

A single exit between you and your safety shouldn’t be permitted. Single exit stairwell buildings continue to pose a deadly risk to public and Fire Fighter safety.

Monday’s tragedy in New York is a sobering reminder of why we continue to fight against these designs right here in Edmonton. Your Edmonton Fire Fighters have spoken out strongly against these types of buildings and the huge danger they pose for the public and our members.

These designs gravely hinder the ability to escape and limit our options to rescue people, ventilate smoke and heat as well as extinguish fires.

Fire Fighters are accustomed to working against the odds to get our job done to keep you safe but these buildings dangerously stack the deck against us and those we serve.

Three people died and 14 were injured early in the morning on May 4 when a fire tore through a Manhattan apartment building, trapping residents in a

Placing others above self.
Putting out fires(hopefully not literally but we bet there’s a few 😬)
Long hours.
Multitasking
Interrupted meals.
Exhaustion.
And, of course loud noises.

Turns out we’ve been apprenticing from Mom since day one.

To the moms in our ranks, the moms of our members, and the moms of the city we protect:

Happy Mother’s Day from the Edmonton Fire Fighters’ Union

Thirty two local leaders were selected from across the IAFF to attend the 2026 Advanced Communications Training Academy this week in Washington, D.C.

Students were led by IAFF Communications Staff, IAFF Strategic Campaigns Specialists as well as industry experts in digital media, AI, social media, crisis management, web design, political strategists and investigative reporters/editors.

Media and communications strategy is evolving on a near daily basis. Our members do amazing work and have important stories. This course keeps us at the forefront of how to tell those stories effectively.

We all look forward to utilizing these learned skills and developed relationships to use back in our home districts and locals.

Thanks so much to the members of the public for their continued support it means so much to these families we support.

Shout out too to our Local 209 members who supported the MD Committee all year and helped amplify their rooftop campout by creating fun videos to countdown the month leading up to the rooftop campout.

The MD Committee braved -30°C temperatures for a week in February for the 2026 rooftop campout; raising an epic $85,000, rounding up another amazing year of fundraising year that totalled $132,000 raised for those affected by Muscular Dystrophy and their families on behalf of Muscular Dystrophy Canada
