Bissell Centre We are an Edmonton-based nonprofit organization working towards the elimination of poverty and homelessness in our community.

Our main hours are our office hours. The Community Space is open Monday to Saturday from 9 am to 6:30 pm and Sunday from 11 am to 6:30 pm. Lunch is served at 11:30 am and dinner is at 4 pm. Housing program services are available weekdays from 9 am to 4 pm, and Housing Workshops run 11 am to 1 pm on Mondays and Fridays. Laundry and showers are available daily until a couple hours before the space closes. Free tax clinics are open every Monday from 1 - 3:30 pm in Bissell East (10530 96 St.).

Poverty affects all aspects of our being — it affects everyone either directly or indirectly. That’s why eliminating poverty and strengthening our community is everyone’s responsibility.

Today is the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty — a day that confronts poverty as a denial of human rights and a barrier to dignity, justice, and belonging. Since 1987, this day has amplified the voices and experiences of people living in poverty, fostered dialogue, and built solidarity to address its structural causes.

This is all part of our mission to remove barriers and support people as they move out of poverty. The services and programs we offer help us meet people where they’re at as we walk alongside them as support on the journey to stability.

Our Chief Programs Officer Candace Noble joined the Canadian Housing and Renewal Association for a study tour in Copenhagen, Denmark, led by the CIH Canada.

Throughout this tour, Candace and everyone else taking part delved deep into Denmark’s 100+ year history of providing public social housing to people who need it most. Tour participants learned about different housing strategies, new program models, and helped create an international community of housing workers all working towards the same goals — eliminating homelessness in their communities.

Eliminating poverty is a collective responsibility — the more we can share our learnings, listen to the experiences of other professionals, and embrace new ways the thinking, the better we can strengthen the community.

Helping people uncover their stabilization includes providing employment opportunities they find meaningful and fulfilling.

Voyageur Trades (VTP) provides real opportunities in the skilled trades for Métis citizens across Alberta, which helps people gain the hours, hands-on skills and confidence needed to move forward in their chosen trade. Recently, the team at VTP upgraded the hand dryers, LED lights, and thermostats at Moonlight Bay, helping it become a more environmentally sustainable retreat!

Through connecting its participants with mentors and opportunities that support long-term success, VTP helps people build pathways that are practical, supported and rooted in real-world experience. Thank you for the amazing work you did at Moonlight Bay!

Did you know Bissell Thrift Shop has been running for 65 years and counting?

This social enterprise has been giving pre-loved items a second life while generating revenue that supports programs and services. In fact, 89 cents of every dollar spent at the thrift shop goes back into Bissell Centre programming.

And the impact adds up. In 2025:
♻️ 174,260 kg of donations received
📦 1,486 items distributed through the Extreme Weather Response shuttle
🔌 10,359 kg of e-waste recycled through our partnership with Quantum Recycling

And it doesn’t stop there! Bissell Centre operates three social enterprises, with revenue from these businesses going directly back into Bissell Centre programs and services.

Today is World Homeless Day — a day to raise awareness about the needs of people who currently experience homelessness and promote work in local communities that removes barriers and support people as they move out of poverty.

At Bissell Centre, our Housing Engagement Team sees the impact of this work everyday. These individuals work tirelessly alongside individuals and families to support people experiencing poverty to navigate barriers and secure stable housing.

Every year, hundreds of people find housing that supports their goals and well-being. We recognize that securing housing is only one part of the journey — together with other programs and community partners, we provide individualized wraparound supports that recognize each person’s unique circumstances and strengths.

Next month is Housing Month. Every November, we share information and stories about how we’re helping to address the housing crisis in our city. Stay tuned to learn more about our approach to housing and what successes we’ve seen towards our vision to eliminate poverty in the community.

The way we collect, display, and interpret information received a huge boost thanks to a group of students.

Over summer 2026, Bissell Centre hosted 13 summer interns from ATB Financial on a project to help refine how we gather feedback from program participants. The team innovated our data collection processes — integrating the ability to compare data across programs to gain clearer pictures on how improvements can be made to services.

Thank you to the folks at ATB Financial and this incredible group of students for the hard work and dedication you put towards our participant feedback, which will ultimately improve our service delivery.

Community means a lot of things to different people, but in the end, it all comes down to connection — the core of our human experience.

Today is International Day for Community. This is a day where we celebrate the communities we hold dear in all their diversity and potential — because seeing, including, and walking alongside each other is vital to strengthening all communities, including the community we work with and belong to every day here at Bissell Centre.

Seeing our vision come to fruition and eliminating poverty is a collective responsibility — because poverty affects everyone in the larger Edmonton community either directly or indirectly.

Access to coordinated supports better addresses root causes of why someone might be experiencing poverty and homelessness — the Service Hub is at the heart of our coordinated supports.

From January 1 to July 31, 2026, the Service Hub saw more than 1,700 unique visitors. We made more than 600 internal referrals to programs and services available from Bissell Centre, plus an additional 86 referrals to other partner organizations in the community. We also brought in four more partners to offer their services on-site at the Service Hub including Voice of Albertans with Disabilities and Neovia Wellness Foundation !

This is just a snapshot of the reach of our programs in 2026 — we’re continuing to support people and bring in additional services for individuals and families to uncover their unique paths towards stabilization.

At Bissell Centre, we strive to build honest, meaningful, and good relationships with Indigenous people. Approximately 60% of the people we walk alongside are relatives and loved ones from Indigenous communities. Working towards Truth and Reconciliation is one of our foundational values that guides the programs and services we offer to the community.

Truth and Reconciliation is a key part of our organizational values, helping us to live and implement the 94 Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. We keep a trauma-informed and strengths-based perspective on every service we provide — honouring the rich tapestry of Indigenous, Métis, and Inuit Nations in Treaty 6, 7, and 8 Territories.

There is still a lot of work ahead — this is one step towards addressing the trauma that people from Indigenous Nations have been carrying for far too long.
