RJ Formanek wanted to start a conversation about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). As an adult who has FASD, he thought educating people and showcasing his diverse skillset and self-reliance was important. And the Red Shoe Walk was born.

With his crimson kicks, RJ took to the street, stopping to talk with anyone willing to learn about FASD. The idea took off and Red Shoe Walks quickly spread across Canada — including in downtown Edmonton.

We're holding our two kilometre Red Shoe Walk on Wednesday, September 9, kicking off in front of Edmonton City Hall starting at 12:30 p.m.

Thank you to the incredible people working at our local Starbucks franchises and the Starbucks Foundation for their generous support towards our mission to work in community and remove barriers as people move out of poverty.

This isn’t the only time our local friends at Starbucks have helped open doors for one another. We regularly see these amazing folks at events like our Coldest Night of the Year walkathon — reminding us all that seeing, including, and walking alongside each other is vital to strengthening the community.

Eliminating poverty in the community is everyone’s responsibility and we are so grateful for our local Starbucks teams being invested in seeing our vision become a reality.

People with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) may experience their own unique challenges — our Fetal Alcohol Spectrum of Services (FASS) program supports individuals and families to uncover their potential.

Through best practices, expert staff, and a human-centred approach, we work to create space for individuals to discover and utilize their strengths to achieve their goals.

Our FASS program includes:
👉Navigation – providing short-term and crisis support, connections to resources, and referrals to FASD assessments.
🙋Advocacy – working alongside individuals who have FASD and other organizations to overcome systemic barriers.
🚶Awareness – every September, we walk alongside individuals with FASD during our Red Shoe Walk for International FASD Awareness Day.
👬Peer Support Group - monthly meetings and activities to help build support networks, interdependence, and strengths.

Connection starts at the Service Hub.

In 2025, we expanded intentional pathways for connection through our Service Hub—helping more people access support, build relationships, and find stability in moments of need.

Located across the street from The Navigation Centre, the Service Hub connects people to complementary services, making it easier to access the right support at the right time.

Through the Service Hub, we :
💙 Connected with 914 people accessing support and services
💙 Provided 756 internal referrals
💙 Provided 505 external referrals

By growing and strengthening the Service Hub network, we’re opening more doors to dignity, stability, and lasting change—meeting people where they are and walking alongside them as needs evolve.
