On May 21, the Ukrainian community in Edmonton came together to celebrate Vyshyvanka Day — a day that honours Ukrainian heritage, identity, resilience, and unity.
The event began with a performance by the Ukrainian choir Viter, setting a heartfelt and inspiring tone for the evening. Participants then took part in a traditional march from 109 Street & 104 Avenue to Violet King Henry Plaza in downtown Edmonton.
The program at the plaza was opened and hosted by Diana Kotsyuba, Member of the UCC-Edmonton Audit Committee, who served as the MC for the evening.
The event was organized in collaboration with UNYF, UCC-Edmonton, and the UCC-APC.
Together, we celebrated the richness of Ukrainian culture and traditions through Vyshyvanka Day — preserving and sharing the symbols, history, and identity that unite Ukrainians across generations and around the world. At the same time, we honoured Ukrainian defenders, remembered the innocent lives lost, and reaffirmed our unwavering commitment to justice, freedom, and continued global support for Ukraine.
We extend our sincere gratitude to the distinguished elected officials and community leaders who joined us and shared messages of solidarity and support, including:
• Heather McPherson, Member of Parliament for Edmonton Strathcona
• Lorne Dach, MLA for Edmonton-McClung
• Honourable Jackie Armstrong-Homeniuk, MLA for Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville and Parliamentary Secretary for Settlement Services and Ukrainian Evacuees
• Lydia Migus, President of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress – Alberta Provincial Council
• Andrii Lytvynets, President of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress – Edmonton Branch
• Viktoria Bozhko, Consul of Ukraine in Edmonton
Thank you to everyone who joined us in celebrating Vyshyvanka Day and standing united with Ukraine.
