IUOE LOCAL 955

IUOE LOCAL 955 Established in 1948, IUOE 955 is one of the largest IUOE locals in North America.

Headquartered in Edmonton, Alberta, with over 10,000 active members, and district offices in Calgary, Edson and Fort McMurray, the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 955 is Alberta's largest trade union supporting mobile equipment operators. Our members are instrumental in building and maintaining Alberta's infrastructure within the mining, oil sands, transportation, and construction

industries. Our members also support municipalities, school districts, and other organizations that incorporate heavy equipment in their operations.

Big thanks to IUOE International’s, André Chénier and Jeff Rakebrand, who journeyed to Alberta's capital city last week to lead organizing training with staff from across western Canada.

It's always a pleasure to have International reps in the house, instructing important education courses like organizing, which is the absolute lifeblood of organized labour and a critical piece of the union pie 👊

A massive congrats to IUOE 955er and community captain, Sandy MacDonald ( rides / Greb Glides), on winning the 2026 Wood Buffalo, Everyday Hero Impact Award!

Sandy and his canine companion, Sam Langford, have made a remarkable impact on the Fort McMurray community through generosity, compassion and hands-on service. Through Cause 4 Paws and other efforts, Sandy has raised more than $200,000 for the local SPCA.

He is always there to support those in need and provides consistent, practical help across the community. His personal connections, visiting day homes with Sam, hosting Santa Paws at IUOE 955, spending time with families and sharing moments of joy have created lasting impressions and strengthened community bonds throughout Wood Buffalo.

Way to go, Sandy! We're proud to have you in the growing 955 family 👊

Meet 955er, Rick!

Rick has dedicated 23 years to Amrize/Lafarge, building a career defined by hard work, leadership and commitment. He started at the Lafarge downtown Stadium Road facility in Edmonton before moving to the Winterburn shop in 2013.

Shortly after arriving in Winterburn, Rick was asked to take on the role of IUOE 955 Job Steward. His dedication and advocacy for the membership quickly stood out, and he was promoted to Chief Job Steward in recognition of his hard work and commitment.

Over the years, Rick has helped negotiate close to a dozen collective agreements. He is currently a key member of the bargaining committee, working hard to secure the best possible deal for members at the shop.

Rick truly defines what it means to be a leader. Through his guidance, influence and motivation, he consistently puts the membership first and has earned the respect of many over the years.
