T2P 3W3 Advocacy is not a neutral activity.

The OCYA advocates on behalf of children and youth receiving child intervention services or who are involved with the youth justice system by ensuring that their rights, interests and viewpoints are acknowledged and acted upon. All staff at the OCYA are driven by a shared concern for young people, and a commitment to doing all we can to improve the services they receive, often through very difficult circumstances in their lives. It is these young people, who have the courage to let us know what they need, that make all our efforts worthwhile. Please do not submit personal information or your advocacy issues through this page. Please contact the OCYA directly.

Today, we take time to reflect on the importance of mental health for children and youth.

Katelyn shares an important message about the value of listening without judgment and creating space for honest conversations.

Every young person deserves to feel supported, understood, and valued. Together, we can help build a kinder, more caring world where everyone feels they belong.

We applaud the Government of Alberta’s announcement of a $2 million investment towards community-based su***de prevention programs for young people.

Strengthening mental health supports and services for children and youth is something our recommendations have spoken to in the past, and we welcome this investment as an important step forward.

This month we recognize the relentless dedication of foster parents and kinship caregivers across Alberta.

By opening their hearts and homes, they help provide stability and care that helps young people feel valued, supported, and safe.

We would like to extend our gratitude to all foster and kinship caregivers for their compassion and commitment. Their work is vital to helping vulnerable young people to have the brightest possible futures.

Today, September 30, we commemorate the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and honour the children who never returned home, Survivors, their families and communities.

In recognition of Every Child Matters, OCYA staff came together yesterday to learn, reflect and honour the experiences of residential school Survivors. Staff proudly wore orange shirts, visited Mother Earth Circling: Healing from the Residential School Experience and walked together to the Kihciy Maskikiy/Aakaakmotaani Garden on the Legislative Grounds.

Today and every day, we continue to listen, learn, remember, and reflect on our shared responsibility for reconciliation.

We stand up for the rights, interests, and viewpoints of young people in Alberta. We do this by:

The OCYA Youth Council creates opportunities for young people with lived experience in the child intervention and youth justice systems to share their perspectives and help inform our ongoing work. Members provide input, take part in consultations with external groups, and meet with government leaders.

Young people across Alberta have different stories, experiences and hopes for the future. Every young person should have the opportunity to feel safe, to belong, to be heard and to thrive.

This year’s International Youth Day theme, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” connects closely to our work at OCYA. We advocate for the rights, interests, and viewpoints of young people receiving designated services and we remain committed to amplifying young people’s voices in the systems and decisions that affect their lives.
