We say farewell to our 55th Coxswain, Chief Petty Officer 1st Class David Ziegler, who joined our corps in September 2019 and aged out of the Cadet Program on June 2, 2026.

As all cadets know, once they reach their 19th birthday, they are no longer able to remain in the Cadet Program. At that time, we hold a ceremony to recognize and celebrate their service and dedication. Today, we celebrate CPO1 Ziegler as he departs from our corps and thank him for the time, leadership, and commitment he shared with us.

During his cadet career, David served proudly as a member of the Drill Team, Band, and briefly the Biathlon Team. He participated in Remembrance Day ceremonies, Poppy Days, sailing regattas, and multiple Mess Dinners, always representing the corps with pride and professionalism. In 2023, he attended HMCS Ontario as a Sail Two cadet, and in 2024 he attended as a Sail Staff Cadet at HMCS Quadra.

Throughout his time in the program, David achieved SCOP Levels 1 through 4, Standard First Aid, CanSail Levels 1 through 4, and Marksmanship qualifications. He served as Chief of Training before being appointed the 55th Coxswain of 238. His dedication and commitment were recognized through numerous honours and awards, including multiple Lamplighter Awards, Officers’ Awards, C**k of the Walk and Jock of the Walk awards, the 6-Year Service Medal, the Lord Strathcona Medal, and the Best All-Around Cadet Award. He was also recognized for maintaining perfect attendance on multiple occasions.

As a small token of our appreciation for his service, David was presented with a service mug engraved with the date he joined the corps and the date he departed, commemorating his time with us.

David, thank you for your dedication, leadership, and the lasting impact you have made on our corps. As you begin the next chapter of your journey, remember that you will always be a member of the 238 family.

During the first weekend of June, our cadets had the opportunity to volunteer at the Alberta Donkey and Mule Show, where they provided valuable support throughout the event. From handing out ribbons and opening gates to setting jumps and tackling the less glamorous manure duty, our cadets stepped up wherever they were needed.

Their hard work, positive attitude, and willingness to serve helped make the event a success while demonstrating the teamwork and community spirit that cadets are known for.

Bravo Zulu to all those who volunteered and represented our corps so well!

Welcoming our 56th Coxswain, CPO1 Kayden Hollman.

As cadets age out of the program at 19, our current Coxswain has reached that milestone, creating a vacancy in this key leadership role. Eligible cadets were evaluated through merit review boards conducted by a panel of adult staff. From those boards, the Commanding Officer reviews the results before making her final appointment decision.

Today, we are proud to announce the appointment of our new Coxswain, who will assume this position of responsibility and leadership within the corps.

At the end of May, our cadets had an exciting opportunity to attend one of our two available weekends dedicated to our corps. During the final weekend of May, PO2 Jomon was honored with the title of “Sailor of the Weekend,” celebrating his outstanding dedication.

Sailor of the Weekend is not awarded to the best sailor, but to the cadet who has demonstrated a positive attitude throughout the weekend, offered help without being asked, and was exceptional at sailing. Bravo Zulu PO2 Jomon!
