The Afro-Caribbean Food Bank Canada Centre is committed to reducing food insecurity, strengthening cultural identity, and advancing the social and economic well-being of Black, Afro-Caribbean, and newcomer communities across Edmonton. Mission Statement
The Afro-Caribbean Food Bank Canada Centre is committed to reducing food insecurity, strengthening cultural identity, and advancing the social and

economic well-being of Black, Afro-Caribbean, African, and newcomer communities across Edmonton and the surrounding region. What Our Charity Supports
The ACFBCC supports individuals and families experiencing hunger, economic hardship, cultural displacement, and limited access to nutritious, culturally familiar foods. We serve low-income households, newcomers, seniors, youth, and vulnerable populations who face systemic barriers to food security and social inclusion. In addition to food distribution, we support community well-being through cultural education, wellness initiatives, outreach services, and partnerships that strengthen collective resilience. Our Goals and How We Aim to Achieve Them

1. Reduce Food Insecurity in Black and Afro-Caribbean Communities
We aim to provide consistent access to nutritious, culturally appropriate food hampers. How we achieve this:

Weekly food distribution and emergency food support

Partnerships with local farmers, food suppliers, and community organizations

Expansion of storage and distribution capacity to meet rising needs

2. Promote Food Literacy and Culturally Based Nutrition Education
We aim to ensure that families understand how to prepare healthy, culturally relevant meals. How we achieve this:

Cooking classes, cultural recipe workshops, and nutrition education

Youth food-literacy programs

Community demonstrations led by multicultural chefs and knowledge holders

3. Strengthen Community Belonging and Cultural Identity
We aim to provide safe, inclusive spaces for cultural connection and community building. How we achieve this:

Cultural celebrations, Black History Month initiatives, and intercultural programming

Outreach programs for newcomers and youth

Collaboration with Indigenous, Afro-Caribbean, and multicultural partners

4. Build Pathways to Long-Term Stability and Empowerment
We aim to support individuals facing poverty, unemployment, or systemic inequities. How we achieve this:

Referral pathways to mental health, settlement, and family-support services

Workforce development workshops and volunteer opportunities

Advocacy, data collection, and research that inform policy and community planning

5. Strengthen Partnerships for Systemic Impact
We aim to build a unified ecosystem that advances food justice and community well-being. How we achieve this:

Collaboration with Edmonton’s Food Bank, multicultural agencies, and local businesses

Engagement with government, foundations, and corporate partners

Building a sustainable donor and volunteer network

Alberta’s D- grade on poverty is a stark reminder of the challenges many families continue to face across our province. Here in Edmonton, the impact is being felt every day, with food insecurity affecting an alarming 28.4% of households.

Behind this grade are real people parents skipping meals so their children can eat, seniors struggling with rising costs, and individuals forced to choose between rent, utilities, and groceries.

Food insecurity is not just about food; it reflects broader issues of affordability, housing, income, and access to support. Together, we must continue advocating for meaningful solutions that ensure everyone has the opportunity to live with dignity and security.

We’re Honoured to Be Featured in YEG Parent Magazine!

The foodbank s proud to be recognized by YEG Parent Magazine for our work supporting children, families, newcomers, and communities across Edmonton.

What started as a vision to provide culturally familiar food with dignity has grown into a community hub where families can access food support, connection, resources, and hope.

This feature highlights the strength of our community, the dedication of our volunteers, partners, donors, and the resilience of the families we serve every day.

Thank you for being part of this journey. Together, we are building a stronger, healthier, and more inclusive Edmonton—one family at a time.
