Portage College Virtual Elders and Mentorship Lisa Bourque-Bearskin

Originally from Lac La Biche, Lisa Bourque-Bearskin is a member of the Beaver Lake Cree Nation.

An offering of respect and encouragement by providing guidance and resources of various educational supports in relational, cultural, spiritual aspects of learning to Portage College staff and students. Students and staff can take advantage of the support and wisdom of the following Elders and Mentors:

Francis Whiskeyjack

Fluent in Cree and English, Francis Whiskeyjack has served as a drug and

alcohol counsellor and a traditional arts teacher. His extensive knowledge of the Medicine Wheel, Aboriginal culture and history has cast him as a reputable and trusted Elder by many educational and health institutions including Alberta Health Services, Edmonton Public School Board, Grant MacEwan University and the University of Alberta. She has ben practicing nursing for over 25 years, and is currently completing her PhD studies at the University of Alberta. She has worked for First Nations and Inuit Health as a Community Health Nurse, and has taught in the Arctic Nursing Program (BScN) in Iqualuit Nunavut. She has committed many years to community service and values volunteerism. Dr. Evelyn Steinhauer

A member of the Saddle Lake Cree Nation in northeastern Alberta, Dr. Steinhauer is an Assistant Professor at the University of Alberta. A visionary, an academic, and a committed lifelong learner, Dr. Steinhauer is an agent for change in the advancement of First Nations Education. She completed her undergraduate degree with Athabasca University; and a Masters of Education Degree, and PhD at the University of Alberta (Department of Educational Policy Studies) where she specialized in Indigenous Peoples Education.

Aboriginal Arts Certificate first year student Tanya Mustus from Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation said, "This is a space to call ours for smudging, prayer, re-grouping, relaxing, seeking counsel, speaking to my spirits and in so many other ways. When I first started at Portage College, I was questioning my choices; if I knew a room like this was in the works, it would [have] eased my second guessing. Knowing there is going to be a place to go when in need of spiritual guidance is calming. When you are lonely or angry or sad or even lost, this room can ground you and re-connect you to your inner strength, no matter how far away from home you are."

Ticket sales will end on April 21, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. with the draw taking place at Portage College on April 23, 2021 at 12:00 p.m. It will be broadcast live on the College’s page.
