Every older person deserves to live with dignity, safety, and respect. This , we invite everyone to unite in standing against the abuse, mistreatment, and neglect of older adults. Together, we can raise awareness, speak out, challenge ageism, and help build communities where every older person is valued, supported, and protected. ASCHA was happy to host Build Canada Homes (B*H) for a small gathering with Alberta housing providers and Ana Bailão – CEO of B*H, for an informal conversation about Alberta's housing development needs and how to increase affordable housing supply through public land access, financial incentives, funding and investment streams and more. Attendees shared their realities and capital project approaches and, together, we envisioned what is possible through B*H and partnerships with housing organizations. ASCHA truly appreciated this engagement opportunity! Read more about ASCHA's vision for B*H partnership here: https://ascha.com/assets/advocacy/buildcanadahomes-2026.pdf

Have you heard about Social Prescribing? It’s a holistic approach that bridges medical care and social care—because health is shaped by more than appointments and medications. For older adults, social prescribing can help address everyday, non-medical needs like housing, food security, transportation, and social connection. By connecting older adults to local programs and supports (like meal services, rides to appointments, exercise classes, and caregiver support), social prescribing can reduce loneliness, support mental health, and strengthen daily functioning.

Healthy Aging Alberta (HAA) is a leader when it comes to Social Prescribing in Alberta and is currently supporting 18 communities to develop and enhance social prescribing initiatives across Alberta. We encourage you to learn more about the great work HAA is doing in this space by checking out their website: https://calgaryunitedway.org/healthy-aging-alberta/social-prescribing/

With Alberta’s rapidly increasing seniors population, the need for more inclusive housing and supports for seniors has never been more important.

ASCHA works with allied organizations committed to more inclusive approaches to aging, housing, and supports. The Alberta Association on Gerontology (AAG) led its Still Me Leaders Forum bringing together thought leaders from across Alberta to explore more inclusive approaches for residents living with dementia.

A final report was published by AAG and the Dementia Network of Calgary, outlining findings from this Forum with key recommendations put forth by the sector. The report can be read here ➡️https://albertaaging.ca/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Still-Me-Leaders-Forum-Report-FINAL.pdf

“Supporting Albertans as they Age” and “Supporting Albertans with the Appropriate Housing and Supports” are more than just two of ASCHA’s foundational advocacy pillars—they reflect a simple belief that wellness is strengthened through prevention, and that people deserve to live with dignity and stability in the setting that best fits their needs. That’s why ASCHA advocates for increased funding for at-home supports and 24/7 access to home care in seniors’ congregate living: improved access helps address needs early, reduces avoidable crises, and prevents premature moves to higher, and often unnecessary, levels of care. This we encourage everyone to read about our advocacy positions at: www.ascha.com/advocacy_current_initiatives.php

June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada, a time to recognize the rich history, heritage, resilience, and diversity of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples. ASCHA encourages everyone to take time this month to listen, learn, and deepen their understanding of the histories and experiences of Indigenous Peoples across Canada.

Alberta is undergoing a significant demographic shift, with a steadily growing number of older adults. By 2051, it’s projected that 1 in 5 Albertans will be a senior—an important change that will increase demand for safe, suitable, and affordable in communities of every size. Meeting this need means ensuring a full range of housing choices, so seniors can find the right fit for their lifestyle, support needs, and budget—whether that’s independent living, supportive living, or more specialized care. Having diverse options helps to uphold individual choice and dignity, while ensuring Alberta’s seniors receive the right supports, in the right place, at the right time.
