Dutch elm disease (DED) has been confirmed in another elm tree in the Downtown neighbourhood. Crews identified signs of the disease and proactively removed the tree on August 14.

In total, 17 elm trees in the City have been confirmed to have the disease since it was first detected in 2024. 10 trees have tested positive in 2026.

Immediate removal of the infected trees alongside a diligent pruning program to clear deadwood is critical to reduce habitats for beetles to spread the fungus.

All elm wood is disposed of at the Edmonton Waste Management Centre following strict, specialized handling procedures.

Our urban forest boasts 90,000+ elm trees. Containing DED is a community effort. If you have an elm on your property, watch for:

πŸ‚ Wilting or yellowing leaves
πŸͺ΅ Brown streaks under the bark
🌿 Branches with no leaves

If you spot any of these signs, please report it to 311 right away πŸ“²

🌳 Bellevue neighbours β€” a quick but important heads up about our elm trees.

Dutch elm disease has now been confirmed in multiple Edmonton locations and our neighbourhood's elms are ones we want to protect. The good news? Early detection makes a huge difference.

Keep an eye out for these warning signs on your elm trees this summer:
πŸ”Έ Leaves drooping, yellowing, or wilting in summer
πŸ”Έ Branches that look sparse or bare
πŸ”Έ Brown leaves that stay on the tree instead of falling
πŸ”Έ Small beetle holes or sawdust on the bark

If something looks off β€” on your own tree, a neighbour's, or a boulevard elm β€” please report it right away.

πŸ“ž Call 311
πŸ’» edmonton.ca/programs_services/pests/dutch-elm-disease

And a reminder: it is illegal to prune elm trees between April 1 and September 30 β€” including boulevard trees, which must only be maintained by the City. If storm damage has left you with elm wood, take it to the Edmonton Waste Management Centre (250 Aurum Rd NE) for free disposal β€” do not store it or use it as firewood.

Our elms are one of the things that make this neighbourhood so beautiful. Let's look out for them together. πŸ’š
