I wanted to take a minute today and make you all aware of the passing of one of my personal heroes.

MWO Marty Clavette MMM CD, passed away this past Sunday.

Marty was a dedicated paratrooper, proud Airborne Regiment Veteran, Veteran of numerous stints with the Canadian Forces Skyhawks, as well as tours in Cyprus (1974 with the CAR), Vietnam, and in retirement he did a tour in Bosnia as a contractor.

My grandfather and Marty served together in the Airborne Regiment, they were also neighbours, and good friends. My family and Marty’s have remained close to this day and we consider them extended our extended family.

I first met him at my own Grandfather’s funeral in 2005. I learned more about my own Grandfather’s service that day from him than I ever did from my own Grandpa.

While I was serving we lived close to each other and I began coming by to cut his grass for him after work at the base and we would share a beer and talk about all things military, and family. I didn’t know it then but I needed that friendship and mentor more than anything.

When I returned home from Kandahar and released from the forces I didn’t get to spend time with him much anymore as I moved home but anytime we were in town we tried to meet up and of course talk about the military and Marty’s incredible career.

I’m not joking when I say they could make movies about him. He helped write many of the manuals that exist out there for airborne operations.

Anywhere you ran into Marty he was often surrounded by people just happy to share space with him and listen to his stories.

He was a gentleman, a fantastic father and husband, an amazing friend, and a hero to me, and always will be.

Rest Easy Jumper, go kiss that beautiful wife of yours and tell her we miss her too.

Carol and Pat, we love you so much. Sending all our love. Your father was one of a kind and we are all better for having shared time and space with him.

For anyone that knew Marty there will be a celebration of life at the St Albert Legion on February 8th.
