Happy Father’s Day and National Dachshund Day!

What are the odds that Father’s Day and National Dachshund Day landed on the same day? Almost as rare as a dachshund admitting they were wrong.

Today we celebrate all the amazing dads out there — the ones who throw the ball 437 times, share their snacks when they said they wouldn’t, and somehow end up with only 6 inches of bed because a wiener dog has claimed the rest.

Whether you’re a dog dad, human dad, foster dad, stepdad, granddad, or just the guy currently being supervised by a dachshund, we hope your day is filled with love, laughter, and only a moderate amount of stubbornness.

⚠️ Event Update: Unfortunately, the dachshund races have been cancelled. While our little athletes won’t be hitting the track this year, there will still be plenty of fun to enjoy throughout the day!

Due to significant rainfall today, we have made the difficult decision to postpone our dachshund races for tomorrow, June 21.

Live racing and the Father's Day buffet are still scheduled as planned. The balloon artists, face painters, and the Alberta Dachshund Rescue will be joining us inside.

We look forward to hosting the dachshunds at a later (and drier) date and appreciate your understanding.

Foster Homes Needed

As a breed-specific rescue, we are seeing more and more dogs coming into care that need a little extra understanding and the right environment to help them succeed.

Many of these dogs are looking for foster homes without small children, or homes where they can be the only dog. (Let’s be honest—dachshunds can be a little… breedist. 😂)

What we’ve learned over the years is that once these dogs decompress, settle into a routine, and realize they’re safe, they often become completely different dogs. The scared, reactive, or grumpy pup that arrives in rescue is rarely the same dog a few weeks later.

That’s where our fosters are invaluable.

If you have a calm home, patience, and room in your heart to help a dog hit the reset button, we’d love to hear from you. Fostering saves lives and gives these dogs the chance to show us who they really are.

We are excited to be working with the Alberta Dachshund Rescue in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Nisku-Leduc, as part of our Horses N' Hounds Father Day races on June 21 to host another 50/50 in support of the dachshund rescue!

The Alberta Dachshund Rescue is made up of a group of dog lovers from across Alberta who focus their efforts on matching dachshunds in need with families who will love them forever. Our handsome little (ahem… cough cough) senior Cooper had a full-mouth extraction today. To be fair, he had already lost quite a few teeth on his own, but unfortunately, this poor boy’s mouth was in pretty rough shape.

Now, Cooper would like everyone to know that he is an 8.5 kg “mini” Dachshund. We aren’t here to argue with him — especially while he’s medicated.

The good news? Cooper came through surgery like a champ and seems to be doing well so far, although we suspect the good drugs are still doing most of the heavy lifting.

It’s important to note that while Cooper’s mouth was severely neglected, Cooper himself was very loved. Sometimes life gets busy, finances get tight, or other priorities take over, and dental care gets pushed to the back burner. Unfortunately, dental disease doesn’t wait, and over time it can become a serious health issue and untreated dental disease can lead to chronic pain, infections, and even become life-threatening. Sadly, we see far too many dogs come into rescue needing extensive dental work.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we’re able to provide the veterinary care these dogs desperately need. Cooper can now heal up, live pain-free, and get ready for the next chapter of his life.

From Cooper (and his now toothless grin), thank you for helping us give dogs like him a second chance.

P.S. Cooper would also like it noted that losing all his teeth does not mean he’s losing any of his appetite. He fully intends to continue his lifelong commitment to snacks.
