Congratulations to Ida Beltran-Lucila for being Edmonton's Historian Laureate for 2026-2028!

Ida is an accomplished arts administrator and distinguished storyteller whose work has significantly advanced the presence and appreciation of Filipino heritage in Edmonton. Since 2016, she has led the Philippine Arts Council (Edmonton), guiding impactful documentary initiatives and a comprehensive cultural mapping project. In 2018, she spearheaded the successful campaign to officially recognize Philippine Heritage Month across the province. Her leadership has extended to serving on the Edmonton Arts Council Board from 2019 to 2022, and she continues to advise the Alberta Fil-Can Community Leaders' Association. In 2025, she founded the Edmonton Philippine International Centre, establishing a dedicated space to preserve and celebrate Filipino heritage, culture, and community archives.

Her project, Echoes of Identity, will map the landmarks of Edmonton’s Filipino diaspora, addressing a critical gap in the City Archives while offering a model that can be adapted by other communities seeking to preserve their own histories.

The Historian Laureate designation recognizes individuals who meaningfully contribute to documenting and interpreting the people, places, and events that shape Edmonton. Ida’s work exemplifies this mandate, as she continues to center arts, culture, and storytelling in ways that amplify and honour Filipino-Canadian experiences.

Finally, sincere appreciation to outgoing Historian Laureate Donna Coombs-Montrose. Your work has meaningfully shaped Edmonton’s story and will continue to influence future generations.

ECAMP’s theme for 2026–27 invites us to explore how our senses shape the way we understand Edmonton—past and present. From the taste of traditional foods to the sounds of everyday life, how do sight, smell, touch, and memory connect us to our city and to each other?

We’re asking big questions: How did people experience the city in the past? How do different abilities shape our understanding of Edmonton today? And whose stories are still missing from our shared history?

To explore this, we’re building a team of writers to share diverse, community‑driven stories through articles, multimedia, and creative storytelling. Together, we’ll create space for voices often left out of local heritage—and bring new perspectives into the conversation.

Last night, we were honoured to attend and present at the FascinAsian Film Festival screening of Have You Heard Judi Singh?

Directed by Baljit Sangra, the film brought Judi Singh’s powerful story to the screen, followed by a thoughtful live Q&A with Baljit, moderated by Poushali Mitra—the writer and researcher whose work inspired the film.
